Successful First Day At Championships For Women's Track Posted: Friday, May 5, 2006 OSHKOSH - The UW-Eau Claire women's track team is sitting third and many individuals have placed high after the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championships, hosted by UW-Oshkosh. That Oshkosh team is in first with 61.5 points. UW-La Crosse is behind them with 52.5. The Blugolds have a 51 tally for the third spot. UW-Whitewater is fourth at 28 while UW-River Falls rounds out the top five with 25. The only Blugold field championship on the day went to Erin Kokta (Sr.-Brookfield/East) in the long jump. Her 5.77 meters (18?111/4") topped all others, with second place reaching 5.60 meters (18?41/2"). She came into the event on top of the WIAC in the long jump and left in the same position. The track championship of the day went to Molly Warner (So.-Mosinee) and her top time of 37:07.21 in the 10,000-meter run. She had the second-best time of the WIAC going into today. Her time today bests all efforts in the conference this season. Eau Claire went into the event looking for Stephanie Barnes (Jr.-Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) to claim the one pole vault championship she has yet to win. She has won the WIAC Indoor, the NCAA Division III Indoor and NCAA Division III Outdoor. Unfortunately, Barnes took second in today's event with a 3.73 meter (12?23/4") jump. Oshkosh's Kelly Rehn also went 3.73 meters (12?23/4"), but took the tiebreaker for the top spot. Barnes came into the event with the highest mark in the conference at 3.94 meters (12?11"). This is the second year in a row she has placed second in the pole vault at the WIAC Outdoor Championships. Liz Faller (Jr.-Marinette) put up the fastest time in prelims for the 100-meter hurdles with 14.46. It is now the fastest time this year in the WIAC. Last year in the finals she managed fifth. Liz Kooistra (Fr.-Lakeville, MN) also moved on past her prelims. She ran a 57.97 400-meter dash for third in the prelims. Warner was not the only one to excel in the 10,000-meter run. Jane-Marie Ovanin (Sr.-Amherst), who came into today with the third best WIAC time, placed fourth at 38:06.72, a season-best. In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Bridget Bocher (Jr.-Watertown) claimed fifth with a season-best time of 11:34.99. She missed fourth by .79. Paula Crossfield (Jr.-Madison/East) took fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.15 meters (144?10"). It is the best mark for Eau Claire this year. The 4x800-meter relay squad finished fourth in 9:49.44. Eau Claire looks to move up in the standings tomorrow at the final day of the championships. Action begins at 9:00 a.m. in Oshkosh.
