LA CROSSE - With 170.10 points and several top placements, the UW-Eau Claire women's track team took the runner-up spot today at UW-La Crosse's six-team Phil Esten Challenge.

The home team took a commanding first place with a 301.70 score. Wartburg College's 85 followed Eau Claire for third. Fourth went to UW-Stout at 81.20.

The Blugolds had three champions in the track events. Liz Kooistra (Fr.-Lakeville, MN) accomplished an NCAA provisional qualifying run in the 400-meter dash on a 56.71 time. Liz Faller (Jr.-Marinette) continued her 100-meter hurdle success from last week's Blugold Open with a winning 14.56 time tonight, which also is an NCAA provisional qualification. Molly Warner (So.-Mosinee) took the 5000-meter run in 17:50.89.

The team fared just as well in the field. Stephanie Barnes (Jr.-Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) again won the pole vault, this time on a 3.77 meter (12?41/2") leap. The nearest competitor was at 3.25 meters (10?8"). Paula Crossfield (Jr.-Madison/East) was first in the discus throw on an NCAA provisional qualifying 43.30 meters (142?1"). First place in the shot put went to Brooke Schmidt (Sr.-Rice Lake/Stanley-Boyd) and her 11.78 meter (38?73/4") throw.

Several Blugolds found themselves in second place today as well. Crossfield took second in the hammer throw on a 43.24 meter (141?10") effort. Schmidt actually finished behind Crossfield in the discus throw with a toss of 37.94 meters (124?6"). Erin Kokta (Sr.-Brookfield/East) leapt 1.59 meters (5?21/2") in the high jump for second. The 4x100-meter relay squad was second in 48.89, another NCAA provisional qualification. Christina Locke (Jr.-Racine/Horlick) ran the 800-meter run in 2:21.28 to finish runner-up.

Some Blugolds will compete in tomorrow's St. Olaf event in Northfield, MN at 9:30 a.m. Next weekend features two events with the Simpson College Invite on Friday and the Drake Relays on Saturday.
