Posted: Thursday, February 23, 2006
The UW-Eau Claire softball team, which finished 33-11 last season and has produced a 59-28 mark over the past two seasons, is ranked No. 16 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll, which was released Wednesday.
The Blugolds have begun practice under fifth-year coach Leslie Huntington, a two-time WIAC Coach of the Year, in preparation for their season opener March 10 against Buena Vista University in Minnesota's Rosemount Dome.
The Blugolds' current 19-player roster includes 12 returning letterwinners among whom are All-Conference performers Mallory McKinney (Jr.-Brooklyn Park, MN/Champlin Park), a pitcher; Jill Janke (So.-Black River Falls), a first baseman; and Casey Leisgang (So.-Seymour), a shortstop.
The Blugolds' seven newcomers include six freshmen, two of whom are pitchers, and transfer Amanda Tschernach (Jr.-Rice Lake), a two-year starter at Winona St. Mary's.
The Blugolds' opening weekend (March 10-12) will involve three doubleheaders in the Rosemount Dome including a showdown with two-time defending NCAA Division III national champion St. Thomas.
