STEVENS POINT - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team came through in the last half of the third period to tie up UW-Stevens Point 2-2, which held throughout to wind up being the final, in this the first time Eau Claire has not lost at Stevens Point since 1995.

Eau Claire is now 0-12-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and 2-19-4 overall. The Pointers are 6-6-2 and 12-9-4 in the respective marks.

The seedings are now set for the NCHA playoffs. Eau Claire is the eighth seed and will play one seed St. Norbert. Stevens Point is the fifth seed and plays fourth seed Lake Forest in its first round game.

Today's game was a rough one, with a team-high 18 penalties for the Blugolds and 15 for the opponents. Stevens Point went one for nine on power-plays and Eau Claire went one for six.

The first Blugold goal of the day was that power-play conversion, which came off the stick of points leader Chip Dunleavy (Sr.-Littleton, CO/Columbine) at 13:11 in the second period. This goal, which had assists from Dave Coleman (Jr.-Whitby, ONT/Leo J. Austin) and Andy Klapperick (Sr.-Austin, MN) tied it up 1-1 as there was an even-sided Pointer goal early in the first.

Stevens Point took the lead back 4:45 into the final period on a power-play. The Blugolds came back to tie it once more at 12:41 when Klapperick sent an evenhanded one in. Matt Schultz (Sr.-Menomonie) and Jeremiah Weber (So.-Hayward) had the assists. Both teams only got one shot off on goal in the extra play as the two skated to a 2-2 tie.

The Pointers outshot Eau Claire 38-25, making for 36 Steffan Braunlich (Sr.-Los Angeles, CA/Loyola) saves.

This is the third time the Blugolds met the Pointers this season. Stevens Point had won the first two. Historically, Eau Claire has had trouble with this particular foe. The all-time record is now 24-54-4 and it is the first non-loss since 1995 at Stevens Point.

Now the playoffs begin in the NCHA. Eau Claire will face one seed St. Norbert this weekend at De Pere. The Green Knights are ranked first in the USCHO.com Division III poll. However, the Blugolds know how to give this team a tough time, as one of St. Norbert's two ties came against Eau Claire. The other meeting came out as expected with a 6-0 Green Knight victory. The quarterfinals begin at 7:00 p.m.
