Swimming & Diving Retain Same Spots After Day Two

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams remained in their number three slots out of six teams at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships today at the U of M Aquatic Center.

The men totaled 325 on the day. UW-Stevens Point remained in first with 675.5 points while UW-La Crosse trailed them at 523.5. UW-Whitewater stands at 247, UW-Oshkosh holds a 185 tally and host team UW-River Falls is sixth with 130.

The women's score of 374 sits behind the 693.5 of La Crosse and the 665 of Stevens Point. Whitewater has 228.5 points, Oshkosh holds a 182 figure and River Falls posts a 144 mark.

Many men added point jumps of over ten to help boost the score from just fewer than 200 yesterday. In the 400-yard individual medley, Brian Jordan (So.-Madison/West) and Peter Shafe (Jr.-Burlington) took fifth and sixth to gain 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Jordan swam it in 4:25.54 while Shafe did so in 4:27.14. Cale Schmidt-Jackson (Jr.-Duluth, MN/East) had a 54.34 100-yard butterfly for eighth place and 11 points. Schmidt-Jackson also took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, an event where Brian Hauerwas (So.-Racine/CASE) took eighth. The former did it in 55.16 for 15 points while the latter did so in 57.31 for 11 points. Patrick Finley (Fr.-Waunakee) swam into fifth place and 14 points in the 200-yard freestyle on a 1:47.20 display.

As far as the relay team, it was disqualified from the 200-yard medley. It took third in the 800-yard freestyle for 32 points on a 7:15.71 effort.

The women added much to yesterday's total with numerous gains of over 10 points. Cori Severson (Sr.-Brainerd, MN) took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.64 for 15 points. In the 200-yard freestyle, Amanda Kroger (So.-Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) and Annie Gorman (Sr.-Menomonie) came in sixth and seventh to gain 13 and 12 points, respectively. Kroger had a 1:59.53 time while Gorman's was 1:59.67. Emily Diehl (So.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.30 for 13 points. Chelsea Moore (Fr.-Plymouth, MN/St. Louis Park) and her 298.65 dive took seventh and garnered 12 Blugold points.

In the relays, the 200-yard medley team took 32 points on a third place 1:54.32 finish. The team also took third in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:59.35. It added 32 to the Blugold bundle of points.

The third and final day of the WIAC Championships begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. as the Blugolds look to move up in the standings.
