Posted: Wednesday, February 8, 2006
EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team outscored UW-River Falls 30-11 in the second half on its way to a 56-32 victory over the Falcons tonight.
The victory gives the Blugolds an 11-11 overall record and a 6-7 conference record. The Falcons fall to an 11-12 record overall and are now 7-7 in the conference.
In a sloppy game, the Falcons scored the first basket of the game, however, that would be their only lead of the game as the Blugolds would score the next seven points capped off by a Rachel Becker (Sr.-Gilmanton, WI) 3-pointer. With score tied at 15 with 8:48 to go in the half, the Blugolds would go on another 7-0 run to go up by seven.
The Blugolds would lead by as much as nine in the first half before going into halftime up 26-21. The Blugolds forced 16 Falcon-turnovers and had 11 more shots in the half than River Falls. The Blugolds had 10 second-chance points, compared to three for the Falcons.
The Blugolds blew it open in the second half. The Blugolds started out the half on a 10-0 run before the Falcons would score their first field goal with 14:49 to go. They would end up outscoring the Falcons 23-2 in the first 14 minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 26. The Blugolds would lead by as much as 28 as they went on to win 56-32.
There were 43 combined turnovers between the two teams with the Blugolds forcing 27. The Blugolds scored 24 points off of those turnovers. This is the least points allowed all season by the Blugolds.
Heidi Arciszewski (Fr.-Thorp, WI) led all scorers with 16 points for UWEC. She also led the team in rebounding with six. Brittanni Hakanson (Fr.-Wheeler, WI/Boyceville) was the only other Blugold in double-figures as she had 10 points. Rachel Becker led the team in assists with eight.
Up next, the Blugolds will travel to play UW-Oshkosh on Saturday afternoon. The tip-off is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
