2008 Volleyball Athletes of the Week

October 27, 2008-November 2, 2008

Katie Fox, Middle Blocker, 5-9, Senior, Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chi-Hi
Fox scored a .474 hitting percentage in two matches this weekend as the Blugolds defeated both Bethany Lutheran and Northland College in three sets. Fox recorded 11 kills total and tied for a team-high seven kills in the match against Bethany Lutheran. She also accumulated five block assists and two solo blocks over the weekend.

October 20, 2008-October 26, 2008

Emily Haese, 5-7, Senior, Setter, Mishicot, Wis.
Haese averaged 10.61 assists per set in five matches this week as the Blugolds won all five. She had team-high assists in each match and accumulated a total of 191 for the week. Haese also added 10 kills and 34 digs for the week and also picked up four service aces and five block assists.

October 13, 2008-October 19, 2008

Abby Freiborg, 5-8, Senior, Outside Hitter, Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West
In three WIAC matches this week, Freiborg led the Blugolds to a 2-1 record, defeating Stout on Wednesday in three sets and Stevens Point on Friday in four, but falling to Whitewater in four sets on Saturday. Freiborg completed the week with a team-leading 42 kills, 12 service aces and was second on the team with 34 digs. She recorded double-digit kill and dig totals in all three matches and had five aces in both of the matches against Stout and Stevens Point.

September 29, 2008-October 5, 2008

Jenna Weber, 5-11, Senior, Middle Blocker, Antigo, Wis.
The Blugolds split this week against nationally ranked opponents, defeating tenth-ranked UW-Oshkosh in three sets Saturday, but losing to sixth-ranked the University of St. Thomas in three sets on Tuesday. In Saturday's match against the Titans, Weber had seven kills and a hitting percentage of .500 as the Blugolds became the only team in the WIAC without a conference loss this season. For the entire week, Weber played in all six sets, accumulating 10 kills, three digs, two assists, one service ace and one block assist.

September 22, 2008-September 28, 2008

Danielle Lucia, 5-8, Sophomore, Middle Blocker, St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo
At the Central College Classic this weekend in Pella, Iowa, the Blugolds went 2-2. Eau Claire lost its first two matches on Friday but bounced back on Saturday with two victories. For the weekend, Lucia accumulated 39 kills, second best on the team, and had a team-high hitting percentage of .295. She also tied for a team-high six block assists and had four digs, one ace and one assist.

September 15, 2008-September 21, 2008

Lindsey Smith, 5-7, Junior, Libero, Maple Lake, Minn.
The Blugolds picked up two spectacular wins this weekend to open conference play. On Friday the Blugolds defeated UW-La Crosse 3-2 with scores of 14-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-20 and 18-16. After being down 14-10 in the fifth set, the Blugolds stormed back for the victory and Smith served the match-winning ace in the contest. On Saturday at Platteville, the Blugolds again won 3-2 with scores of 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 17-25 and 15-8. For the weekend Smith accumulated 55 digs (5.5 digs per set) and six service aces.

September 8, 2008-September 14, 2008

Abby Freiborg, 5-8, Senior, Outside Hitter, Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West
This weekend at the College of St. Benedict's Tournament the Blugolds went 2-2, splitting for their third consecutive tournament to start the season with a 6-6 overall record. Freiborg led the Blugolds with 55 kills in 15 sets, averaging 3.67 kills per set, and was second on the team with 37 digs, 2.47 per set. She also added one service ace and five blocks (one solo, four assists) on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team.

September 1, 2008-September 7, 2008

Emily Haese, 5-7, Senior, Setter, Mishicot, Wis.
Haese was named to the All-Tournament team as she helped lead the Blugolds to their second place finish at the 2008 Augsburg College Invitational this weekend. Haese led Eau Claire in assists this weekend with 136 and had the third most overall in the tournament. She also finished second in the tournament with 9.07 assists per set. Haese competed in 15 sets, contributing seven kills, four service aces, 21 digs and five block assists. The Blugolds split on the weekend, winning two matches 3-0 and losing two closely contested matches 3-2. In the championship match, the Blugolds were up 2-0, but No. 8 St. Thomas stormed back to win the next three and take the match.

August 25, 2008-August 31, 2008

Emily Zupon, 5-9, Sophomore, Outside Hitter, Antigo, Wis.
In Zupon's first weekend with the Blugolds at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis, Mo., she played an important role to help the team start the year with a 2-2 record. Zupon led the team with 43 kills and had a hitting percentage of .346. She also served three aces in the four matches, which was tied for third most on the team. Zupon added 12 digs and had five blocks (two solo, three assists). For her efforts, Zupon was named to the All-Tournament team.
