2011-12 Tennis Athletes of the Week

April 23, 2012-April 29, 2012

Maddie Johnson, Freshman, Lakeville, Minn./South
At the WIAC Team Tournament this weekend, where the Blugolds finished in second place, Johnson won one singles match and one doubles match against UW-Oshkosh. At No. 4 singles, Johnson won 6-0, 6-2 while she and partner Gretchen Bachmeier won 9-7 in the No. 2 doubles spot. She finished the regular season with an 18-9 overall singles mark and a 23-8 record in doubles play with Bachmeier.

April 16, 2012-April 22, 2012

Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley
Heltne won one singles and one doubles match as the Blugolds defeated Northwestern College (Minn.) 9-0 on Friday. Playing at No. 1 singles, she won 6-2, 6-1 and won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles with partner Katie Gillman. Wrapping up the regular season, she won eight straight doubles and singles matches.

April 9, 2012-April 15, 2012

Maddie Johnson, Freshman, Lakeville, Minn./South
Johnson finished the week with a 2-0 singles and 2-0 doubles record. Friday against St. Scholastica, she won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while her and partner Gretchen Bachmeier won No. 2 doubles 8-4. The Blugolds beat the Saints 8-1. Sunday against Edgewood College, a team the Blugolds beat 9-0, Johnson won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles spot and recorded an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles with partner Bachmeier. Johnson is now 16-9 in singles play on the year and 21-7 with Bachmeier in doubles play.

March 26, 2012-April 1, 2012

Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley
Heltne went undefeated this weekend, winning two No. 1 singles matches and two No. 1 doubles matches. Against St. Catherine (Minn.) on Saturday, a team the Blugolds beat 9-0, Heltne won 6-3, 6-4 in singles play while winning 8-5 with partner Katie Gillman at No. 1 doubles. Later in the afternoon in a 7-2 win over Bethel Univ. (Minn.), she won 6-1, 6-0 in singles play and 8-0 in doubles. Heltne is now 17-7 in singles competition and 21-4 in doubles play this season.

March 19, 2012-March 25, 2012

Mary Frassetto, Sophomore, Oshkosh, Wis./West
Frassetto went undefeated in doubles play this past week as the Blugolds competed on Spring Break in Hilton Head Island, S.C. In the No. 3 spot, Frassetto and her partner Lexi DeMario won 8-4 on the first two days over Allegheny, Pa. and Nebraska Wesleyan. The pair then won 8-2 over St. Thomas, Minn. on March 21 and closed Spring Break with an 8-0 win over Smith College (Mass.) on March 22. On the season, the duo holds a 12-5 record.

October 10, 2011-October 16, 2011

Singles: Katie Gillman, Sophomore, Red Wing, Minn.
Gillman went 1-1 this weekend at No. 3 singles, beating her UW-La Crosse opponent 7-6, 6-3 Saturday while falling to her UW-Whitewater opponent 6-3, 6-3 Sunday. She finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-4 and a conference record of 5-1.

Doubles: Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley & Katie Gillman, Sophomore, Red Wing, Minn.
Heltne and Gillman swept conference opponents this weekend at No. 1 doubles, beating their UW-La Crosse opponents 8-3 Saturday while coming away with an 8-4 win Sunday against their UW-Whitewater opponents. The pair finished the regular season winning nine straight matches and had an overall record of 15-2 and a conference record of 6-0.

October 3, 2011-October 9, 2011

Singles: Renee Nelson, Freshman, Madison, Wis./La Follette
In two matches this week, Nelson went 2-0 playing at No. 5 singles. Friday, she gave up just one game as she beat her UW-Stevens Point opponent 6-1, 6-0. Against UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, she fell in the first set 6-3, but came back to pick up the match victory 6-1, 10-8.

Heltne and Gillman picked up two conference wins this week at No. 1 doubles defeating their UW-Stevens Point opponents 8-1 Friday while beating their UW-Oshkosh opponents 8-3 Saturday. The pair improved to 4-0 in conference play and has won seven straight matches. For the season, they hold a 13-2 overall record.

September 26, 2011-October 2, 2011

Singles: Lexi DeMario, Sophomore, Verona, Wis./Verona Area
In one match this week, DeMario helped the Blugolds to a 5-4 win over Lawrence University. She won at No. 6 singles, giving up just one game to finish with scores of 6-0, 6-1. In singles play, she is 4-1 on the season.

Doubles: Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley & Katie Gillman, Sophomore, Red Wing, Minn.
Heltne and Gillman played well at No. 1 doubles this weekend facing Lawrence University, which the Blugolds defeated 5-4. The pair won with a score of 8-1 to improve to 7-2 on the season.

September 19, 2011-September 25, 2011

Singles: Maddie Johnson, Freshman, Lakeville, Minn./South
Johnson won the No. 3 flight at the 2011 Gustavus Adolphus College Fall Invitational this weekend, winning four straight matches. After beating three opponents fairly quickly - she gave up just four games in the first two matches - Johnson battled a Luther College (Iowa) opponent for the championship. Johnson dropped the first set 7-5, but rallied to take the remaining sets 7-5, 10-6.

Doubles: Maddie Johnson, Freshman, Lakeville, Minn./South & Gretchen Bachmeier, Junior, Eau Claire, Wis./North
Winning five straight matches, Bachmeier and Johnson won the 2011 Gustavus Adolphus College Fall Invitational Doubles competition this weekend. After playing four close matches - two were won by results of 9-8 and 9-7 - the pair defeated a UW-La Crosse team 8-2 for the championship.

September 12, 2011-September 18, 2011

Singles: Maddie Johnson, Freshman, Lakeville, Minn./South
In two matches this week, Johnson won both times while losing only two games. Against UW-Stout on Thursday, she won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot and picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory Saturday facing Macalester College (Minn.). For the season, she is 4-1, playing primarily at No. 4.

Johnson and Bachmeier picked up two wins this week, defeating their UW-Stout opponents 8-1 on Thursday and their Macalester (Minn.) opponents 8-3 on Saturday in the No. 2 spot. The duo is now 5-1 on the season at No. 2 doubles.

September 5, 2011-September 11, 2011

Singles: Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley
Heltne remained undefeated on the season after winning twice at No. 1 singles in Iowa this weekend. She used super tiebreakers to defeat both of her opponents to improve to 4-0 on the year. Facing Luther, she won 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 while picking up a 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 win against St. Benedict.

Doubles: Mary Frassetto, Sophomore, Oshkosh, Wis./West & Lexi DeMario, Sophomore, Verona, Wis./Verona Area
Frassetto and DeMario recorded a No. 3 doubles victory this weekend in Iowa to remain undefeated in doubles play on the season (2-0). The pair competed against St. Benedict on Saturday and came away with an 8-2 victory.

August 29, 2011-September 4, 2011

Singles: Gretchen Bachmeier, Junior, Eau Claire, Wis./North
Bachmeier picked up two No. 2 singles wins this weekend in Iowa. Facing the University of Dubuque, she came away with a 6-1, 6-1 win while defeating her Loras College opponent 6-0, 6-0 to wrap up the day. As a team, the Blugolds came away with two victories to start the season.

Doubles: Katie Gillman, Sophomore, Red Wing, Minn. & Taylor Heltne, Junior, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley
Gillman and Heltne gave the Blugolds a spark in the No. 1 doubles spot this weekend as the Blugolds opened the season with two wins Saturday. Against the University of Dubuque, the pair won 8-1 while coming away with a victory over Loras College with the same score.
