2003-04 Tennis Athletes of the Week

April 12, 2004-April 18, 2004

Katie Kuzma, So., Buffalo, MN
Kuzma went 3-1 on the weekend in singles play advancing to the semifinals of the five-team Luther Invitational. Kuzma defeated Laura Fourre of St. Benedict's 6-2, 6-2, Tasha Allemang of Luther 6-2, 6-3 and Jacie Haroldson of Luther 6-4, 6-0 before falling to eventual champion Miriam Blom-Skrage of Luther 1-6, 2-6. Alongside doubles partner Jennifer Stafford, Kuzma and Stafford also advanced to the doubles semifinals defeating Tara Huinker and Kirsten Madsen of Luther 8-4 in quarterfinal action.

October 13, 2003-October 19, 2003

Singles: Katie Steffes, So., St. Joseph, MN (Apollo)
Steffes won two matches at No. 3 singles and one at No. 2 singles to run her record to 6-0 in the WIAC and lead the Blugolds to a 3-0 record in three conference meets this week. In three matches this weekend, Steffes dropped just two games. She defeated Lauren Young of Oshkosh without dropping a game while topping Megan Knoblach of River Falls 6-0, 6-1. She finished her perfect week with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tiffany Serpico of Stevens Point.

Doubles: Katie Kuzma, So., Buffalo, MN & Jenny Stafford, Sr., Middleton
Kuzma and Stafford led the Blugolds to a 3-0 record last week as they won all three doubles matches in the No. 1 spot. They lost only four games in the week, defeating three conference opponents and running their record to 9-1 overall this fall, including undefeated in WIAC at No. 1 doubles.

September 22, 2003-September 28, 2003

Singles: Molly Cadwell, Sr., Fridley, MN
Cadwell showed the strength of the Blugolds tennis program as she took first in the Fall Classic singles tournament in Gustavus. She defeated five opponents en rout to the championship. Cadwell relied on past experience to guide her, as she is a two time doubles champion of the tourney.

Doubles: Katie Kuzma, So., Buffalo, MN (Gustavus Adolphus) & Jenny Stafford, Sr., Middleton
The pair advanced to the quarterfinals of the tough ITA tourney at Gustavus. The Blugolds tandem won two tough matches to advance to the quarters where they fell to the third seeded team of Gustavus.

September 15, 2003-September 21, 2003

Singles: Katie Kuzma, So., Buffalo, MN (Gustavus Adolphus)
In a difficult day against Luther College, Kuzma scored an impressive victory in the No. 2 singles spot to improve her record to 4-1 for the year. Kuzma won the match in straight sets 7-5, 7-6.

Doubles: Katie Kuzma, So., Buffalo, MN (Gustavus Adolphus) & Jenny Stafford, Sr., Middleton
The pair was the only Blugold doubles tandem to win their match against Luther as they took the match 8-4. The win improved the pair's record to 2-0 this season as a double team.

September 8, 2003-September 14, 2003

Singles: Jenny Stafford, Sr., Middleton, WI
Stafford continued her winning ways with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nicole Hayzk of UW-Stout in a 9-0 victory over the Blue Devils. This season Stafford is a perfect 4-0 at No. 1 singles.

Doubles: Molly Cadwell, Sr., Fridley, MN & Laura Geissler, Fr., Coon Rapids, MN
The team of Cadwell and Geissler defeated Nicole Hayzk and Rachael Weber of UW-Stout 8-3 as the Blugolds defeated the Blue Devils 9-0. Cadwell and Geissler are 4-0 in doubles competition this season.
