2008 Soccer Athletes of the Week

October 20, 2008-October 26, 2008

Offense: Jamie Schiesel, 5-5, Sophomore, Midfielder, Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong
Schiesel helped lead the Blugolds to their league-leading 15th win of the season, picking up a goal and two assists in two contests. Schiesel assisted on the first two goals of the game against Platteville as the Blugolds went on to win 7-0. She scored an unassisted goal in the second half of the contest to give the Blugolds a 6-0 lead.

Defense: Allie Rivard, 5-10, Senior, Goalkeeper, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata
Rivard recorded her seventh shutout of the season and improved her record to 15-1-3 as the Blugolds defeated Platteville 7-0 on Wednesday and tied St. Thomas on Sunday 0-0 in two overtimes. Rivard recorded five saves in the two contests and now has a save percentage of .815 for the year and a goals-against-average of 0.54.

October 13, 2008-October 19, 2008

Offense: Rachel Nerison, Forward, 5-6, Freshman, Maple Grove, Minn.
In two games this week, Nerison scored three goals to help the Blugolds to a league-leading 14 wins. Nerison had the game-winning goal in the Blugolds' 2-0 victory over UW-Stout on Wednesday. On Saturday Nerison found the net twice, scoring her 10th and 11th goals of the season. Her first goal was the Blugolds' eventual game-winner as they took down Oshkosh 4-1.

Defense: Megan Hillesheim, Midfielder/Defender, 5-9, Sophomore, Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine
Hillesheim played two solid contests this week, competing almost every minute of each game. In the two games, Hillesheim's defensive play allowed the Blugolds to only give up two five shots, while her team was able to put up 37 on the other end.

September 29, 2008-October 5, 2008

Offense: Liz Kooistra, 5-5, Senior, Midfielder, Lakeville, Minn.
The Blugolds remained unbeaten (12-0-2) and set a new school record for consecutive games without a loss at 14, winning three games last week. The Blugolds also improved to 4-0-0 in the WIAC with a 3-1 win over Whitewater Saturday. They also defeated MIAC powers Macalester College 2-1 Wednesday and Carleton College 3-0 Sunday, both on the road. Kooistra played a big role in this week's games, scoring two goals and assisting on three others. In the game against Macalester, Kooistra picked up the Blugolds' first goal of the game and assisted on their last. In Sunday's game she assisted on the first goal of the game, while she scored the third goal of the contest, her seventh overall goal this season. Against Whitewater, she assisted on the Blugolds' opening goal of the game.

Defense: Allison Muer, 5-7, Senior, Defender, Minneapolis, Minn./South
Taking over the defensive responsibilities for injured Allison Smith, Allison Muer helped the Blugolds set a new school record for consecutive games without a loss at 14. Muer's contributions on the defensive end played a big role in the Blugolds' three victories this week, making many defensive tackles and clearances. The Blugolds remained undefeated in conference play with a 3-1 win over Whitewater Saturday, and defeated MIAC powers Macalester College 2-1 Wednesday and Carleton College 3-0 Sunday, both on the road.

September 22, 2008-September 28, 2008

Offense: Jessica Millard, 5-6, Senior, Midfielder, Madison, Wis./La Follette
In three games this week Millard scored two goals to help the Blugolds stay unbeaten in conference play (3-0) and undefeated on the season (9-0-2). Her fourth goal of the season came against Loras College on Sunday as she broke through the defense on a great through ball. She placed the ball perfectly in the side netting for the second goal of the game. On Wednesday, Millard also picked up an unassisted goal in the Blugolds' 13-0 victory over Superior.

Defense: Allie Rivard, 5-10, Senior, Goalkeeper, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata
For the second straight week Rivard came up big to help the Blugolds stay unbeaten in conference play (3-0) and undefeated on the season (9-0-2). She recorded three shutout victories, lowering her goals against average to 0.57. In the Loras game on Sunday with the score 1-0 in the Blugolds favor, Rivard made two incredible breakaway saves.

September 15, 2008-September 21, 2008

Offense: Liz Kooistra, 5-5, Senior, Midfielder, Lakeville, Minn.
In two road games this week, both against nationally ranked teams, Kooistra picked up one goal and played well on both ends to help the Blugolds stay undefeated on the season. Against two-time defending national champion Wheaton College on Saturday, Kooistra scored the lone goal of the first half to allow the Blugolds to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead. The game went into overtime, however, and ended in a 2-2 tie. In Friday's game at the University of Chicago, Kooistra put up three shots, one being on goal, to help the Blugolds in their 1-0 victory. For the season, Kooistra is now third on the team in total points with nine (three goals, three assists).

Defense: Allie Rivard, 5-10, Senior, Goalkeeper, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata
Rivard recorded a shutout this weekend as the Blugolds defeated the 12th-ranked University of Chicago 1-0 Friday. On Saturday, she faced played the entire 110 minutes in the net for the Blugolds against two-time defending national champion Wheaton College. She helped the Blugolds to a 2-2 tie against the Thunder, ending their 30-game home winning streak. Rivard and the defense also played more than 40 minutes of the game a defender down as the Blugolds had one player red-carded in the contest. For the weekend, Rivard picked up six saves and did a great job helping defend 21 corner kicks by the Maroons and Thunder.

September 8, 2008-September 14, 2008

Offense: Amy Smith, 5-4, Senior, Forward, Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson
In three games this week, Smith accumulated six goals including a hat-trick in the Blugolds' 8-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday. In Wednesday's 8-2 win over St. Olaf Wednesday, Smith also picked up two goals, and on Saturday in Eau Claire's WIAC opener, she scored the first goal of the contest in the Blugolds 4-1 win over River Falls. For the season she leads the Blugolds with 16 points on eight goals.

Defense: Alyssa Walker, Defender, 5-7, Freshman, Madison, Wis./West
The Blugolds continued their tough defensive streak with three victories this week, including a 4-1 conference win over River Falls Saturday. The Blugolds also defeated St. Olaf 8-2 on Wednesday and Nebraska Wesleyan 8-0 on Sunday. Walker and the rest of the Blugolds' defense allowed only seven shots in three contests, five of which were on goal. For the season Eau Claire is out-shooting opponents 144-32.

September 1, 2008-September 7, 2008

Offense: Jessica Millard, 5-6, Senior, Midfielder, Madison, Wis./La Follette
This Saturday the Blugolds beat Augsburg College (Minn.), which was undefeated coming into the game, by a score of 3-0. Millard scored her first goal of the season, a game-winning goal for the Blugolds. While Eau Claire pressured the Auggies' side with 10 shots in the first half alone, Millard was the first to find the goal, scoring at 36:25.

Defense: Megan Hillesheim, 5-9, Sophomore, Defender, Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine
Hillesheim helped the Blugolds hold the Augsburg College Auggies to one shot the entire contest in the Blugolds' 3-0 victory Saturday. In addition, Hillesheim and the rest of the team did not allow one shot on goal the entire 90 minutes.

August 25, 2008-August 31, 2008

Offense: Amy Smith, 5-4, Senior, Forward, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson
Smith picked up four points this weekend scoring two goals in the Blugolds' two games in San Antonio, Texas. Smith struck first for the Blugolds in both of their games, and helped the team come away with a 1-0-1 record against two nationally ranked teams. In Friday's game, Smith scored against Hardin-Simmons' All-American goalkeeper on a cross from Elizabeth Kooistra. On Saturday in the Blugolds victory, Smith broke behind the defense after a throw-in and put the ball in the net for her second goal of the season.

Defense: Allison Smith, 5-5, Senior, Defender, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson
Smith played two complete games during the Blugolds trip to Texas, including two ten-minute overtime periods in their contest Friday. Against two nationally ranked opponents, Smith and the Blugolds allowed only three goals while scoring four themselves. The Blugolds also allowed only 24 shots, 11 of them on goal.
