2007 Soccer Athletes of the Week

October 29, 2007-November 4, 2007

Defense: Anna Talbot, Defender, 5-4, Senior, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview
In this week's three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season wins, Talbot anchored a defense that helped the Blugolds come out on top in the WIAC's conference tournament. The Blugolds' defense only allowed 18 shots in all three games and only gave up one goal. The Blugolds now have 14 shutouts on the season in part because of Talbot's efforts. In the championship game Saturday, Talbot and the defense held the conference's leading scorer, Amanda Prawat, to only two shots.

Offense: Jamie Schiesel, Midfielder, 5-4, Freshman, Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong
In three games this week, Schiesel scored two goals for the Blugolds, her fifth and sixth of the season. In a tough battle on Saturday against the Stevens Point Pointers, Schiesel scored the game's only goal, lifting the Blugolds to their third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

October 22, 2007-October 28, 2007

Defense: Allison Smith, 5-5, Junior, Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson
In only one game this week, the Blugolds defeated UW-River Falls 6-0 to clinch its third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. The win was the Blugolds' conference-leading 12th shutout of the season. The Blugolds have also only given up four goals to conference opponents while scoring 33 this season. Smith and the Blugolds allowed only four shots to River Falls the entire match. A big part of those dominating defensive statistics is the play by Allison Smith. Not only is she a threat on the defensive side of the ball, but is also very effective on the offensive side. Smith ranks second on the team in assists (seven) and fifth in points (11). In the game against River Falls, Allison picked up her seventh assist of the season on a corner kick that Jamie Schiesel headed into the net.

Offense: Jamie Schiesel, 5-4, Freshman, Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong
The Blugolds clinched the its third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship, with a 6-0 victory over UW-River Falls on Saturday. In the win, Schiesel picked up her third and fourth goals of the season. Ofstedahl played strong defense this week, helping lift the Blugolds to two more shutouts in the 1-0 victory over Carleton College on Wednesday and the 4-0 win over UW-Whitewater Saturday. The Blugolds have now had a total of seven shutouts on the season and continued their dominance, allowing only seven shots in two games, with only one coming against conference opponent UW-Whitewater.

In Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Carleton College, Smith had the game's only goal, her third game-winning goal of the season. In Saturday's 4-0 win over conference opponent UW-Whitewater, Smith assisted on the game-winning goal and added to more goals, scoring the second and third of the game. September 17, 2007-September 23, 2007

In this weekend's conference opening game against UW-La Crosse, Smith anchored the defense in a dominating performance in the 4-0 victory. The Blugolds held the Eagles to just one shot, with no shots on goal, and helped the Blugolds record their fifth shutout of the season. September 10, 2007-September 16, 2007

Defense: Brittany Burrant, 5-9, Freshman, Stevens Point, WI
As a freshman, Burrant has started every game as an outside right defender and is a big reason the Blugolds have only given up two goals in the first six games of the season. In two games this weekend Burrant had many great tackles and clearances. In the first game of the weekend Burrant played very well and frustrated any player who tried to receive the ball in her area. In the second game of the weekend, Burrant picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on a corner kick in the Blugolds' shutout win over the St. Olaf Oles.

Offense: Amy Smith, 5-4, Junior, Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson
In two games this weekend, the Blugolds stayed unbeaten with a tie and a win. Smith's contributions played an important role for the Blugolds. In Saturday's game against the University of Chicago, Amy created many great goal scoring opportunities. Playing against a tough Chicago defense, it only took Smith less than a minute into the second half to shoot one off the crossbar, which came directly back to Gina Christenbury for the game's first goal. Unfortunately with only 15 seconds remaining in the game, Chicago found the goal on a rebound from a direct kick, and the Blugolds would have to settle for a tie. In the second game of the weekend, the Blugolds got out of the gate very quickly and played their best first half of the season, scoring two goals less than 30 seconds apart. Smith found the net for the Blugolds' first score of the game against St. Olaf. The game winner was Smith's second of the season and helped the Blugolds to a 5-0-1 record.

September 3, 2007-September 9, 2007

Defense: Anna Talbot, 5-4, Senior, Apple Valley, MN/Eastview
In two games this weekend the Blugolds limited their opponents to just seven shots total. The Blugolds recorded their second and third shutouts of the season, getting off to a 4-0 start. Talbot played exceptionally well in both games and was a big part of the team's high pressure defense.

Offense: Amy Smith, 5-4, Junior, Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson
Smith scored her first goal of the season this weekend in Saturday's game against St. Scholastica. To score the goal, Smith beat two defenders, and her shot found the top right corner of the goal. Smith's game winning goal on Saturday led the Blugolds to their fourth victory of the season.

August 27, 2007-September 2, 2007

Defense: Allison Smith, 5-5, Junior, Defender, Bloomington, MN/Jefferson
In this weekend's games against non-conference opponents, Smith had both a goal and an assist. On a free-kick from 25 yards out, Smith assisted in the Blugolds first goal of the season on Friday against 21st-ranked Macalester. Smith's kick hit the crossbar, but Jessica Millard headed it into the goal. In Saturday's game against Augsburg, Smith scored the second goal of her collegiate career (last time was in 2005) also on a 25 yard free-kick. Smith also anchored the Blugold's defense, which allowed only three shots on Friday and six shots on Saturday.
