2006 Soccer Athletes of the Week

November 6, 2006-November 12, 2006

Defense: "Allie Rivard, Goalie, 5-10, Sophomore, Plymouth, MN/Wayzata"
Rivard and the Blugold defense continue to frustrate opposing offenses as UW-Eau Claire began their NCAA tournament run with two shutout wins. In a 2-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead recorded eight saves as the Blugolds defeated the Cobbers for the second time this season. Earlier in the year the Eau Claire defeated Moorhead 1-0 in the Blugolds' only overtime match of the season. In a 4-0 victory over Augustana (IL) Rivard delivered 66:56 of shutout soccer before being pulled out of the match. Rivard and a stellar defensive effort held the Vikings to zero shots on goal at the time Rivard left the game. For the season Rivard has allowed just one goal in 1,302:35 of action for a 0.07 goals against average saving .977 percent of shots faced. The Blugolds continue to add to their school records with 23 wins on the season and 18 shutouts, including a current streak of eight straight.

Offense: "Maria Iaizzo, Forward/Midfielder, 5-8, Senior, White Bear Lake, MN"
Iaizzo recorded her second hat trick of the season as the Blugolds went 2-0 on the week and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. In a 4-0 second round victory over Augustana (IL) Iaizzo put the Blugolds on the board with her first goal at 5:25 of the match to give Eau Claire a 1-0 lead Leading 2-0 at half time Iaizzo put the game out of reach by scoring two second half goals, the first at 61:03 and the second at 73:08 to put the match out of reach. For the season Iaizzo has scored 18 goals and 10 assists for a total of 46 points, including nine game-winning goals. For single season records Iaizzo ranks second in points (record 47-Kari Blasczyk 2000), tied for second goals (record 20-Kari Blasczyk 2000) and tied for third in assists (record 17-Tammy Brandt 1994).

October 30, 2006-November 5, 2006

Defense: " Jessica Millard, Midfielder, 5-5, So., Madison, WI/La Follette"
In the WIAC championship game Millard won more than a dozen headers and helped the Blugolds sustain possessions in the attacking half of the field as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh 3-0. Millard helped the Blugolds earn three straight shutouts this week breaking the previous school record of shutouts in a season with 14 and tying the conference record of 16 by Stevens Point in 1992. The win marks the second straight season that the Blugolds both won the WIAC tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

Offense: "Liz Kooistra, Midfielder/Forward, 5-5, So., Lakeville, MN"
Kooistra scored fours goals, two in the quarterfinal match versus Platteville and two in the championship match against Oshkosh as the Blugolds won the WIAC Post-Season Tournament and clinched an automatic birth into the NCAA post-season tournament. The goals put Kooistra up to 23 points on the season with nine goals and five assists. The win marks the second straight season that the Blugolds both won the WIAC tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

October 23, 2006-October 29, 2006

Defense: "Anna Talbot, Defender/Midfielder, 5-4, Junior, Apple Valley, MN/Eastview
Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

In a battle of two 17-win teams, Talbot and the Blugolds shut out St. Scholastica (MN) 3-0 to set a new school record for wins in a season with 18. Matched up against Robin Johnson, the Saints' top scorer with 45 points, Talbot held Johnson to a single shot and helped the Blugolds earn it's 13th shutout of the season and ended the Saints 15 game winning streak. In addition to her marking duties Talbot also had an assist on the game-winning goal.

Offense: "Emily Meisinger, Midfielder/Forward, 5-7, Senior, Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame Academy"
In a battle of two 17-win teams, Meisinger came up big assisting on the game-winning goal and scoring an insurance goal as the Blugolds defeated St. Scholastica (MN) 3-0. The goal and an assist gives Meisinger 21 points on the season and helped the Blugolds set a new school record for wins in a season with 18, and ended the Saints 15 game winning streak.

October 16, 2006-October 22, 2006

Defense: "Becky Westbrock, Defender, 5-3, Senior, Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul

Westbrock held the WIAC's leading goal scorer to one shot as the Blugolds defeated UW-River Falls 3-0 and claimed its second consecutive conference championship outright. With the win the Blugolds went undefeated in conference play with a perfect 8-0 record holding their opponents to just four goals scored in those matches. The following day against St. Thomas (MN) Westbrock scored the game-winning goal, the first goal of her career, and assisted on another goal as the Blugolds defeated the Tommies 3-0. The shutout victory was the 12th of the season for the Blugolds lowering its goals against average to .42 while holding opponents to an average of 5.2 shots per game. The win against St. Thomas also tied the school record for wins in a season with 17.

Offense: "Maria Iaizzo, Forward/Midfielder, 5-8, Senior, White Bear Lake, MN"
Iaizzo scored her sixth game-winning goal of the season as the Blugolds defeated UW-River Falls 3-0 to win its second consecutive WIAC regular season championship outright. With the win the Blugolds went undefeated in conference play with a perfect 8-0 record. The goal against the Falcons was the 13th of the season for Iaizzo. The following day at St. Thomas (MN) Iaizzo assisted on the game-winning goal as the Blugolds defeated the Tommies 3-0. The win tied a school record for wins in a season with 17.

October 9, 2006-October 15, 2006

Defense: "Allie Rivard, Goalie, 5-10, Sophomore, Plymouth, MN/Wayzata"
Rivard did not allow a goal as she was in net in the second half of two matches as the Blugolds defeated UW-Platteville 3-1 and Loras (IA) 2-1 as the Blugolds clinched a share of their second consecutive WIAC regular season championship. Against Loras Rivard had three key saves for the Blugolds who overcame a 1-0 half time deficit to earn the win.

Offense: "Maria Iaizzo, Forward/Midfielder, 5-8, Senior, White Bear Lake, MN"
Iaizzo had a big offensive week as the Blugolds clinched a share of their second consecutive WIAC regular season championship. In a 3-1 victory at UW-Platteville Iaizzo scored two consecutive second half goals to break a 1-1 tie and clinch a WIAC championship for the Blugolds. Trailing 1-0 at Loras (IA) Iaizzo assisted on both second half goals to give Eau Claire a thrilling come-from-behind victory.

October 2, 2006-October 8, 2006

Defense: "Liz Weirick, Goalie, 5-9, Junior, Kenosha, WI/Tremper"
Weirick helped the Blugolds improve to 6-0 in conference play with a 5-0 victory at UW-Superior and 4-2 win against UW-Oshkosh. In the first half of the UW-Oshkosh game with the score tied 2-2 UW-Oshkosh was awarded a penalty kick in which Weirick made a tremendous diving save on the penalty kick and helped the Blugolds go into halftime tied 2-2.

Offense: "Amy Smith, Forward, 5-4, Sophomore, Bloomington, MN/Jefferson"
Smith had a big offensive week in helping the Blugolds to a 3-0 record this week, including two conference victories. The Blugolds outscored their opponents 11-2 in those three matches. Smith scored the game winner in the Superior game, scored the fourth goal in the Oshkosh game and had a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over Augsburg (MN). For the season Smith now has 8 goals and 6 assists for a total of 22 points and has helped the Blugolds stay undefeated in conference play and 13-1 overall.

September 25, 2006-October 1, 2006

Defense: "Abby Ofstedahl, Defender, 5-3, Jr., Apple Valley, MN/Eastview
Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

Ofstedahl made one stop after another as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stevens Point 3-0. The victory improved the Blugolds' conference mark to 4-0 and ended a 24-match winless streak against the Pointers. Ofstedahl's tenacious play would help the Blugolds hold Stevens Point to just four shots in 90 minutes.

Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

After not playing over the last two weeks, Kooistra came back just in time to score the winning goal in a 3-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point. Kooistra received the ball form central midfielder Jessica Millard and put the close range shot past the Pointer goal keeper. The goal proved to be the difference in the game and helped the Blugolds beat the Pointers for the first time since 1991, a streak of 24 matches, and keeps the Blugolds undefeated in conference play at 4-0.

September 18, 2006-September 24, 2006

Defense: "Becky Westbrock, 5-3, Senior, Defender, Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul"
In three games this week the Blugolds held their three opponents to 5,2, and 1 shots in defeating UW-Stout 3-0, UW-Whitewater 6-1 and Hamline (MN) 2-0. Westbrock is part of a defense that post a conference-best .22 goals against average only surrendering two goals for 829 minutes of play. Westbrock had a hand in all three victories this week to keep the Blugolds undefeated on the season and extended its home win streak to 14 games with out a loss.

Offense: "Maria Iaizzo, Senior, Forward, White Bear Lake, MN"
In three games this week Maria tallied four goals and two assists, including a hat trick and an assist vs. UW-Whitewater. Iaizzo now has 18 points on the season leading all Blugolds with 7 goals and 4 assists. Iaizzo had a hand in all three victories this week to keep the Blugolds undefeated on the season and extended its home win streak to 14 games with out a loss.

September 11, 2006-September 17, 2006

Defense: "Becky Westbrock, 5-3, Senior, Defender, Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul"
Keyed a Blugold defense that blanked two opponents this past week for the team's fourth and fifth shutouts in six starts this season. Head coach Sean Yengo said that Becky 'stopped countless opportunities by La Crosse trying to penetrate behind the Blugold defensive unit.' In the Concordia win, he said Becky 'played almost every minute and helped hold Concordia to a single shot in the second half and two overtime periods.' The Concordia decision extended the Blugolds' home field win streak to 11 games. In

Offense: "Emily Meisinger, 5-7, Senior, Forward, Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame Academy"
In dramatic fashion, Meisinger scored the game-winning goal with just 42 seconds remaining in the second overtime against Concordia. The goal helped Eau Claire extend its home field win streak to 11 games. Meisinger's goal 'was precisely tucked into the upper left corner of the net off a beautiful heel pass from Maria Iaizzo,' said head coach Sean Yengo. The goal allowed the nationally-ranked Blugolds to remain unbeaten on the season.

September 4, 2006-September 10, 2006

Defense: "Allison Smith, 5-4, Sophomore, Defender, Bloomington, MN/Jefferson
Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

Keyed a Blugold defense that has stopped four opponents this year. The only goal allowed by the Blugolds came on a penalty kick in the 86th minute against Illinois Wesleyan. The Blugolds held Illinois Wesleyan to six shots after allowing Millikin just two shots in a pair of road victories over the weekend. The nationally-ranked Blugolds are off to a 4-0 start this season with three shutouts.

Offense: "Liz Kooistra, 5-5, Sophomore, Midfielder-Forward, Lakeville, MN"
In two road games this weekend, Kooistra had a goal and two assists to help the Blugolds remain unbeaten with a 3-0 triumph over Millikin and a 2-1 decision over Illinois Wesleyan. Against IWU, Kooistra beat the defender one on one, then dished off to Alison Muer for the first Blugold goal. She scored the eventual game-winning goal 'with sheer determination by breaking two tackles and getting her own rebound for the score,' according to veteran head coach Sean Yengo.

August 28, 2006-September 3, 2006

Offense: "Maria Iaizzo, 5-8, Senior, Forward-Midfielder, White Bear Lake, MN
Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

Was named tournament MVP as the Blugolds won the Rachel Smith Memorial Tournament hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. She had the game-winning goal in each game as the Blugolds beat RIT, 2-0, and Cortland, 1-0.

Defense: "Liz Weirick, 5-9, Junior, Goalkeeper, Kenosha, WI/Tremper"
Named to the six-player all-Tournament team in the Rachel Smith Memorial Tournament which the Blugolds won at RIT with shutouts over the host school and Cortland. Played the first half of each game. Head coach Sean Yengo said Weirick had two big saves in the first half of the RIT game when the game was still scoreless.
