2002 Soccer Athletes of the Week
November 4, 2002-November 11, 2002
Offense: Maleia Damato, Jr., Cedarburg
Had an impressive performance in a new position in the championship match against UW-Stevens Point. She showed her offensive strength by scoring a goal against the Pointers as well as helping the Blugolds control the midfield.
Defense: Becky Smith, Jr., Kenosha (Tremper)
Helped the Blugolds hold UW-La Crosse to just two shots on goal and was a big part of the Eau Claire defense that helped the Blugold advance to the championship match against Stevens Point. She mad many serves from the flank which created offensive opportunities for the Blugolds.
October 28, 2002-November 3, 2002
Offense: Kiley Zellner, So., Green Bay (Preble)
Scored two goals in the Blugold's only match this week against Elmhurst College (Illinois). The second of her two goals was the eventual game winner sending Eau Claire into postseason play on a winning note.
Defense: Marcia Foltz, Fr., Madison (Memorial)
Played a big role in the Blugold defense that held Elmhurst College to five shots on goal, including just one shot in the first half. Helped the Blugold conclude their regular season with a 3-1 victory.
October 14, 2002-October 20, 2002
Offense: Emily Peterson, Sr., Oak Grove, MN/Francis
Was a big part of the Eau Claire offense against two conference opponents this week as she scored a goal and controlled the midfield, holding Superior to zero shots on goal and La Crosse to just two shots on goal. Helped Eau Claire outscore its opponents this week 11-0.
Defense: Erin Ziech, Jr., McFarland
Played a big role for both the Eau Claire defense and offense. Offensively, she scored three goals in two matches, including what turned out to be the game winner against La Crosse. Defensively, she helped the Blugolds hold their opponents to just two shots on goal in two matches.
October 7, 2002-October 13, 2002
Offense: Emily Peterson, Sr., Oak Grove, MN/Francis
Scored the winning goal in a 3-1 victory over conference opponent UW-Whitewater. Her offensive play helped the Blugolds pound the Warhawks with 24 shots on goal and allowed Eau Claire to gain sole possession of second place in the WIAC standings.
Defense: Michelle Hanninen, Fr., Eagan, MN
Was a big part of the Eau Claire defense that held conference rival UW-Whitewater to only five shots on goal. She assisted the first goal of the match against Whitewater, helping the Blugolds get on their way to topping the Warhawks 3-1 and giving Eau Claire second place in WIAC standings.
September 30, 2002-October 6, 2002
Offense: Marcia Foltz, Fr., Madison/Memorial
In three matches this week she helped the Blugolds outshoot their opponents 71-15 including a corner kick advantage of 23-7. She added three assists and one goal to help the Blugolds to a 11-2-1 record on the season.
Defense: Maleia Damato, Jr., Cedarburg
Helped the Eau Claire defense hold their opponents to just 15 shots in three matches, including holding Stevens Point to just six shots on goal. In addition to her defensive play, she added an assist to help the Blugold win back to back matches in Savannah, Georgia.
September 23, 2002-September 29, 2002
Offense: Jullia Powell, Sr., Hartford/Hartford Union
Scored three goals and added four assists in three games this week to give her an impressive 10 points in just three games. Her two assists on Sunday helped push the Blugolds past an 8-0 Luther College team by a score of 2-1.
Defense: Michelle Hanninen, Fr., Eagan, MN
Helped Eau Claire limit their opponents to just one goal in three games this week. The Eau Claire defense held an undefeated Luther College to just four shots, allowing zero goals to their top goal scorer, who had piled up 15 goals in the past 8 games.
September 16, 2002-September 22, 2002
Offense: Liz Henderson, Fr., Minneapolis, MN/South
Scored three goals against Concordia in a dominating performance. Her two first half goals helped give the Blugolds a 7-0 lead at halftime. She added one more in the second half for the hat trick and a 10-0 victory.
Defense: Megan Brady, Jr., Dousman/Waukesha Catholic
A big part of the Eau Claire defense that shut out both Concordia and UW-Stout. Her efforts helped hold Stout to only three shots on goal en route to a 0-0 tie and held Concordia to just two shots in a 10-0 win.
September 9, 2002-September 15, 2002
Offense: Megan Oswall, So., Stevens Point/SPASH
Scored the game-winning goal against UW-River Falls on a header. The goal, at the 58:00 mark, put the Blugolds up 3-1 at that point in the game. The Blugolds also won another conference road game at UW-Oshkosh last week.
Defense: Becky Smith, Jr., Kenosha/Tremper
Cited by head coach Sean Yengo for her contributions in a 1-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh that kept the Blugolds unbeaten in conference play. The Blugold defense blanked the Titans and Smith also assisted on the only goal scored in the game.
September 3, 2002-September 8, 2002
Offense: Jullia Powell, Forward, 5-4, Senior, Hartford
Scored both Eau Claire goals in a 3-2 double overtime loss to Macalester which had a home field unbeaten streak of 50 going to their showdown with the Blugolds. She also drew praise from head coach Sean Yengo for her performance in a 3-1 win at the College of St. Benedict, which was ranked No. 6 in the Central Region.
Defense: Erin Ziech, Defense, 5-10, Junior, McFarland
Cited by head coach Sean Yengo for her contributions against two highly-regard teams in road games. The Blugolds won at St. Benedict and lost a double overtime game to Macalester which extended its unbeaten home match streak to 51 games.
April 30, 2002-September 2, 2002
Offense: Jullia Powell, Forward, 5-4, Senior, Hartford
Scored the first goal in a 4-0 win over Carleton and had one assist in a 3-2 overtime win against St. Thomas, a nationally-ranked team in one preseason poll. The Blugolds rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat St. Thomas on its own turf, scoring the tying goal with seven minutes left in regulation and the overtime goal seven minutes into overtime.
Defense: Erin Ziech, Defense, 5-10, Junior, McFarland
The Blugold defense allowed Carleton just two shots and two corner kicks in posting a shutout. Ziech also delivered some big tackles in a 3-2 overtime win against St. Thomas, a nationally-ranked team in one preseason poll, according to head coach Sean Yengo.
