2008-09 Wrestling Athletes of the Week

February 9, 2009-February 15, 2009

Joe Pitsch, 285 pounds, Freshman, Oshkosh, Wis./North
Pitsch was one of four Blugolds to pick up wins on Saturday at UW-Stevens Point, but the Blugolds came up short 26-15. He won a 6-4 decision over Brett Oswald in the heavyweight category. A week before, Oswald pinned Pitsch at the UW-Eau Claire Invite.

February 2, 2009-February 8, 2009

Josh Holforty, 197 pounds, Senior, Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy
Holforty won the 197-pound bracket at this weekend's 31st annual UW-Eau Claire Invite as the Blugolds finished fifth out of 11 teams. Holforty, who is ranked fourth in the nation at 197 pounds, won a 4-1 decision over Stevens Point's Jeremy Fulk in the championship match. While he received a bye in the first round, he won his next two matches to make it to the championship round. Holforty's final two victories were the 100th and 101st of his career.

January 26, 2009-February 1, 2009

Seth Hendricks, 165 pounds, Junior, Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner
In one match this week, Hendricks came up with a victory over UW-La Crosse's Jeff Erkel. He finished the match with a 6-5 decision.

January 19, 2009-January 25, 2009

Andy Miller, Senior, 133 Pounds, Appleton, Wis.
Miller was one of two Blugolds to pick up victories against St. Cloud State University, but Eau Claire fell short 36-6 against the Huskies on Saturday. In Miller's match at 133 pounds, he defeated Josh Williams, who is ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, by a 2-1 decision.

January 5, 2009-January 11, 2009

Andy Johnston, 149 pounds, Junior, St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech
With the Blugolds going 2-1 on the week, Johnston picked up three victories at 149 pounds. On Wednesday in Eau Claire's 39-3 win over Lawrence University, Johnston won a 7-6 decision, while in the Blugolds' 30-19 loss to UW-Platteville he recorded a pin in 3:33 over Shawn Flom. On Saturday Johnston won a 12-7 decision over Concordia-Wisconsin's Joe Massman as the Blugolds went on to win the dual meet 22-21.

December 8, 2008-December 14, 2008

Josh Holforty, 197 Pounds, Senior, Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy
This weekend, Holforty won the 197 pound weight class at the St. Cloud State Open. Holforty began the first round with a bye, and later defeated Felton Banks with a pin in 2:43 to move on to the quarterfinal round. Holforty went on to defeat Ted Saatzer of Division II St. Cloud State University by technical fall and moved on to the semifinal match against St. John's Tony Willaert, who is ranked fourth in Division III. Holforty defeated Willaert with a 10-2 major decision. In the championship match, Holforty won a 3-1 decision over Pat Mahan of Division II Minnesota State-Mankato to take home the crown.

December 1, 2008-December 7, 2008

Andy Miller, 133 Pounds, Senior, Appleton, Wis./North
Miller went 3-1at 133 pounds this weekend at the UW-La Crosse 2x4 duals as the Blugolds split. The Blugolds opened the duals with a 24-18 win over Augustana and followed that with a 37-12 loss to 12th-ranked Cornell College. They then went on to defeat No. 19 Loras College 24-20 but came up short 27-12 against No. 8 North Central College to end the day. In his opening match, Miller won by technical fall (18-0) over Max Gailey. He then lost his only match of the day, falling to 4th-ranked Nick Northern of Cornell by a score of 3-1. The match had been tied up at 1-1 but Northern recorded two points with a takedown with 1 second left in the match to pull off the win. Miller then picked up an 11-0 victory over Loras' Mark Beatty and followed that by pinning North Central's Robert Tobin in 5:50.

November 17, 2008-November 23, 2008

Josh Holforty, Senior, 197 pounds, Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy
Holforty, who is ranked fourth in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll at 197 pounds, took third place at 197 pounds at this weekend's Augsburg College Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open. He made it to a semifinal match after pinning Derek Smith in 4:25 to open the day and followed with an 8-1 decision over Wartburg's Mickey Sprague. Holforty then lost to Chadron State's Josh Majerus, who was the NCAA Division II national champion last year and was the runner-up in 2007, by a 6-2 decision and dropped down to the third place match. He then pinned St. John's Tony Willaert, who is ranked third in the NWCA poll, in 5:49 to take third. For the weekend he went 3-1.

November 10, 2008-November 16, 2008

Andy Miller, Senior, Appleton, Wis./North
Miller won three matches at 133 pounds this weekend at the Lakeland Duals as the Blugolds kicked off their 2008-09 campaign. In his first match he won with a pin in 1:52 over Sam Delain of Lakeland College. He then followed that with an 8-5 decision over St. John's Muluchbaatar Baalar, who was an All-American wrestler a season ago and is ranked fifth this season. Later in the day he pinned UW-Parkside's Brandon Kircher in 2:03 to start the season 3-0.
