2007-08 Wrestling Athletes of the Week

February 10, 2008-February 17, 2008

Andy Miller, 133, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North
Miller was the only Blugold to defeat an opponent in a match this week, winning by technical fall over Pat Parrillo of UW-La Crosse. Miller did not allow Parrillo to score a point, taking a 17-0 victory at 133 pounds on Tuesday. On Saturday he was also able to keep the match close against UW-Stevens Point but came up short, 4-7, in the end.

February 4, 2008-February 10, 2008

Nick Hoeft, HWT, Senior, Merrill, Wis.
Eau Claire went 1-1 last week, winning 23-22 over St. Olaf on Wednesday and losing to No. 10 UW-Whitewater 25-17 on Saturday. Hoeft won both of his matches wrestling at heavy weight. On Wednesday Hoeft picked up a 16-3 major decision over George Jimenez to help the Blugolds edge St. Olaf by one point. On Saturday Hoeft's 2-1 victory over Sean Evans, who is ranked 10th nationally, earned the Blugolds three points. Heoft is now 18-10 on the season.

January 28, 2008-February 3, 2008

Josh Holforty, 197, Junior, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy
This past weekend at the 30th Annual UW-Eau Claire Invite, Holforty took first place at 197 pounds, winning three matches on the way. He was also named the invite's outstanding wrestler. In his first match of the day, Holforty defeated UW-La Crosse's Zach Strickland 6-0, and then followed with a 16-5 major decision over UW-Stevens Point's Zach Ison. In the championship match, Holforty won 8-3 over UW-La Crosse's Tim Winker. Holforty is now 24-5 on the season and is ranked sixth in the nation at 197 pounds.

January 14, 2008-January 20, 2008

Andy Johnston, 149, Sophomore, St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS
Named for the second week in a row, Johnston won the 149-pound weight class in the Dan Gable Open hosted by UW-Oshkosh Sunday. He went 3-0 as the tournament's No. 4 seed, beating No. 1 seed Will McDermott of Northern Illinois, 4-2, in the semifinals and No. 3 seed Eric Seppelt of La Crosse, 9-5, in the title match. He opened with a 14-3 decision over Oshkosh's Derek Koenig.

January 7, 2008-January 13, 2008

Andy Johnston, 149, Sophomore, St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS
The Blugolds were 1-1 this week, defeating Platteville 22-20 in a tight fought battle on Tuesday and losing to St. Cloud State 42-0 on Friday. In Tuesday's match against Platteville's Dillon Pontnack, Johnston came up big with a 2-1 win in two overtimes. In Friday's loss, Johnston again had a close match but came up short, losing to Chad Kusback 3-1.

December 31, 2007-January 6, 2008

Josh Holforty, Junior, 197 pounds, Bloomington, Minn.
Helping the Blugolds to a seventh place finish out of 13 teams at the Matman Invitational hosted by Cornell College this weekend, Holforty picked up first place in the 197-pound division. Holforty came in as a No. 2 seed, and after receiving a first round bye, won four matches to take first. Holforty won his first match to William Penn's Karl Spain by technical fall, and then won by a 14-3 major decision in the next round and a 9-3 decision in the third. In the match for the championship, Holforty defeated No. 1 seed Paul Hartt from Lakeland College by sudden victory in the first overtime. Holforty lost to Hartt earlier this season by sudden victory.

December 10, 2007-December 16, 2007

Ted Sikowski, Senior, 184, Appleton, Wis./West
The Blugolds opened conference play this week against Lawrence University in Appleton, where they picked up a 42-4 victory. The Blugolds had two pins during the meet, but Sikowski was able to pin his opponent in 1:07, the second fastest pin of the year for the Blugolds. It was also Sikowski's first pin of the season.

December 3, 2007-December 9, 2007

Joey Miller, Senior, 174, Lake Tomahawk, Wis.
Was runner-up at 174 pounds in the 37th annual St. Cloud State Husky Open which included a number of Division I and II teams. Was beaten by the University of Minnesota's Kaleb Young, 5-2, in the final. Trailed 3-2 late in the match when he went for a takedown and was taken down by Young for the final margin. En route to the championship match, beat St. Cloud State's Derek Skala, 12-3; Southwest Minnesota State's Greg Frank, 8-2; and Platteville's Corey Van Groll, 10-3. Van Groll placed fourth, Skala fifth and Frank sixth in the meet. With the high finish, Miller improved his season record to 9-3.

November 26, 2007-December 2, 2007

Andy Miller, Junior, 133, Appleton, Wis./North
This weekend the Blugolds picked up their first win, as they defeated Itasca Community College 26-16 on Friday. Andrew Miller picked up a victory when he pinned Dominic Horne in 4:53. The pin was the only one of the meet and his second of the season.

November 19, 2007-November 25, 2007

Joey Miller, Senior, 174, Lake Tomahawk, Wis.
In last week's home opening meet, the Blugolds faced nationally ranked Luther College. While Eau Claire lost 13-30, Joey Miller was able to pull off a victory, winning with a 14-3 decision at 174 pounds. Miller is now 6-3 on the season and his Luther College opponent, Bradon Reyerson, fell to 6-4.

November 12, 2007-November 18, 2007

Josh Holforty, Junior, 197 pounds, Bloomington, Minn.
Holforty competed in the gold bracket for the Blugolds this weekend at the Augsburg Open, where he finished as champion in the 197-pound weight class. In the opening round, Holforty pinned Upper Iowa University's Matt Norton and then went on to face Scott Jennings of Luther. Holforty then won by technical fall and moved on to third round. In the third round, Holforty faced teammate Dave Heser and won by a 6-1 decision. In the championship round, Holforty faced Itasca Community College's Aaron Young by a 6-2 decision for the win.

John Berlin, Sophomore, HWT, Shell Lake, Wis.
Competing in the silver bracket this weekend at the Augsburg Open, Berlin went 2-0 to take first place in the heavyweight bracket. Berlin started the day with a bye, but finished with two pins. In his first round, he pinned Luther's Aaron Adami to move on to the championship round, where he also pinned Itasca Community College's Tyler Manning.

November 5, 2007-November 11, 2007

Josh Holforty, Junior, 197 pounds, Bloomington, Minn.
Facing three teams at the Lakeland Duals this weekend, Holforty went 2-1, winning against opponents from St. John's and Coe College, but losing to Paul Hartt from Lakeland College. In the first match of the day, Holforty defeated Coe's Rob Kramer 6-1. He then lost to Lakeland's Paul Hartt narrowly by a score of 7-5. In the final match of the day, Holforty defeated St. John's Jason Finley 15-3.
