2002-03 Wrestling Athletes of the Week

March 3, 2003-March 9, 2003

Adam Kolo, 197 pounds, Sr., Vesper, WI (Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln)
Kolo took home a fifth place finish at the 2003 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University. After dropping his opening match, Kolo came back strong with a 7-1 decision in the consolation bracket. In the next round he showed another impressive performance with a 7-0 decision. After falling in the consolation semi-final match, Kolo responded with a overtime victory to claim fifth place in the 197 pound bracket.

February 17, 2003-February 23, 2003

Davey Starks, 125 lbs, Sr., Stoughton
Starks won the 125 pound bracket at the WIAC Wrestling championships in Platteville as he enters the national competition with a perfect 32-0 record. Starks won his fourth consecutive conference championship becoming only the fifth wrestler in WIAC history to do so. After a first round bye, Starks advanced to the finals with an 8-3 second round decision. In the finals he topped John Rombca of Whitewater with a 14-5 decision.

February 10, 2003-February 16, 2003

Chris Muller, 157 pounds, Sr., Rochester, MN (John Marshall)
Muller earned victories in both matches this week against conference opponents UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point. Against Tony Wright of Whitewater, Muller earned a dominating 10-1 decision victory. In a match against Craig Resch of Stevens point, Muller won the contest via technical fall with a score of 18-2.

February 3, 2003-February 9, 2003

Davey Starks, 125 pounds, Sr., Stoughton
The second-ranked wrestler in the country at the 125 pound weight class added to his unbeaten record with a major decision against UW-La Crosse on Tuesday and by winning the 125 pound division at the North Country Tournament hosted by St. John's. The Blugolds took sixth in a very large field which included the top two ranked teams in the country. Starks made his way to the finals of the tournament via three decision wins and capped the tourney victory off with a 12-3 major decision in the championship round.

January 27, 2003-February 2, 2003

Davey Starks, 125 lbs., Sr., Stoughton
Starks led the Blugolds to a third place finish as the Blugolds hosted the UWEC Wrestling Invitational which included five teams currently ranked in the top 30 in the country, including four ranked members of the WIAC. Starks, who is ranked second in the country individually at the 125 pound weight class, won the 125 pound division for the Blugolds. Starks made his way to the finals with a first round pin and a second round 8-3 decision. In the finals, Starks took a 7-4 decision to claim the 125 pound title. With three victories at the invite, Starks improves his season record to an unbeaten 23-0.

January 20, 2003-January 26, 2003

Derek Sikora, 165 lbs., Fr., Neillsville
Won both matches in back to back meets on Friday against WIAC opponents Lawrence and Oshkosh. Against Lawrence, Sikora earned an 8-1 decision while he won an 11-5 decision against Oshkosh.

January 13, 2003-January 19, 2003

Adam Kolo, 197 pounds, Sr., Vesper, WI (Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln)
Kolo went a perfect 5-0 in matches this week in a dual meet against Platteville and while participating in the Terry Haws Dual Tournament hosted by St. John's (MN). Kolo started the week off with an 11-3 decision over Dan Robinson of Platteville. In the first round of the Terry Haws Invitational Kolo pinned Mike Cunningham of Rochester in 2:23 to help give the Blugolds a 34-12 win over Rochester. After winning by forfeit against St. Olaf, Kolo took a 6-0 decision against MSU-Moorhead en route to defeating Moorhead 24-20 and leading the Blugolds into the championship round. In the championship round Kolo won a 9-0 major decision over Brian Tesch of Southwest State.

December 2, 2002-December 8, 2002

Derek Sikora, Fr., Neillsville
Finished with a record of 3-1 this week wrestling at the 165 pound weight class. In matches at the La Crosse Duals on Saturday he finished 3-0 including a pin in under two minutes against Brian Daly from Augustana College (Ill.) which helped lead the Blugolds over Augustana, who was ranked 20th in the nation coming into the event. Sikora also won by decision against Concordia University and Central College (Iowa) and helped the Blugolds finish 3-0 for the La Crosse duals.

November 18, 2002-November 24, 2002

Josh Frie, Sr., Mondovi
Scored some much needed points for the Blugolds against St. John's University as he wrestled in the 184 pound weight class. As the Blugolds fell behind early, Frie pinned St. John's wrestler Chris Dykhoff at the 3:43 as the Blugolds would score the last 12 points of the meet but fall just short 19-21.

November 11, 2002-November 17, 2002

Davey Starks, Sr., Stoughton
Won first place honors at the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open in the 125-pound weight class. Starks was one of three Eau Claire wrestlers to take first or second place in their respective weight classes against some of the best schools in division III wrestling.
