2005 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

May 9, 2005-May 15, 2005

Track (Relay): Track-4x400-meter relay team of Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem), Breanna McMullen, Sr., Fall Creek, Kristi Hansen, Sr., Rosemount, MN, and Liz Faller, So., Marinette
The 4x400-meter relay team set a new school record in the event as they took third place at the Dr. Keeler Invitational. The team posted a time of 3:50.62, crushing the old mark of 3:53.28 set at the WIAC Outdoor Championships on May 7. The time currently ranks the Blugolds second in the event in the country, behind only Washington's (MO) mark of 3:50.03.

May 2, 2005-May 8, 2005

Field: Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien was named the track athlete of the meet at the WIAC Women's Outdoor Championships held last weekend in La Crosse. She took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a finals time of 14.48 seconds, which tied the WIAC record. She ran an even faster time in the prelims, posting a time of 14.38 seconds to break the Eau Claire school record. Stafslien was also a member of both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams, which each broke school records at the championships. The 4x100-meter relay team posted a time of 48.17 seconds while the 4x400-meter relay team finished in 3:53.28. Stafslien also posted second place finishes in both the long and triple jumps, besting her own school record in the triple jump.

Field: Paula Crossfield, So., Madison (East)
Crossfield took home a seventh place finish in the discus and an eighth place finish in the shot put as the Blugolds took fourth place at the WIAC Championships. She posted a distance of 39.59 meters in the discus and 12.00 meters in the shot put. Crossfield also took 12th in the hammer throw with a distance of 38.10 meters. Her hammer throw and shot put throws were season bests for Crossfield.

April 25, 2005-May 1, 2005

Track (Relay): Track-4x400 Relay Team of Kristi Hansen, Sr., Rosemount, MN; Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem); Kallie Krueger, Sr., Fall Creek; and Breanna McMullen, Sr., Fall Creek
Hansen, Stafslien, Krueger, and McMullen posted a season-best time of 3:53.70 in the preliminary round of the 4x400-meter relay at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The time placed them seventh on the NCAA Division III list this season in the 4x400.

April 18, 2005-April 24, 2005

Track: Breanna McMullen, Sr., Fall Creek
McMullen grabbed a victory in the 400-meter hurdles event at the Manitou Classic hosted by St. Olaf. She posted a provisionally-qualifying time of 1:03.91 to take the win. McMullen also took sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.61 seconds. She was a member of the second-place 4x400-meter relay team as she ran a split of 57.9 seconds.

Field: Paula Crossfield, So., Madison (East)
Crossfield posted a lifetime best throw of 40.92 meters (134-3) in the discus competition at the Manitou Classic. The throw was good for third place in the event.

April 11, 2005-April 17, 2005

Track: Sarah Kasabian-Larson, Sr., East Peoria, IL (E.P.C.H.S.)
Kasabian-Larson helped lead the Blugolds to a second place finish at the windy and rainy Blugold Outdoor Open last Saturday. She earned a victory in the 10,000-meter run, posting a time of 39:16.80 in the victory. She was the first Blugold to run the 10K this season.

Field: Paula Crossfield, So., Madison (East)
Crossfield grabbed a second place finish in the discus competition as the Blugolds took second place out of nine teams at the Blugold Outdoor Open. She posted a throw of 38.10 meters (125-00) for the finish and also took seventh place in the shot put competition with a season-best throw of 11.46 meters (37-7.25).

April 4, 2005-April 10, 2005

Field: Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien kicked off the outdoor season with a bang, winning two events at the Falcon Invitational and capturing third place in another. On the track side, she earned a first place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.66 seconds in the final. She advanced through the preliminaries with a time of 15.28 seconds despite running into a big wind. Stafslien also won the long jump and took third in the triple jump. Her distance of 5.65 meters (18-6.5) was good for the win in the long jump, a provisional qualification to nationals, and a lifetime best, while her mark of 10.89 meters (35-8.75) placed her third in the triple jump.

Field: Stephanie Barnes, So., Sauk City (Sauk Prairie)
Barnes set a new school record in the pole vault as she won the event at the Falcon Invitational. She cleared a height of 3.71 meters (12-2), good for an automatic qualification to national competition. She broke her own school record of 3.52 meters (11-6.5), set May 9, 2003 in La Crosse.

February 21, 2005-February 27, 2005

Track: Liz Faller, So., Marinette
Faller had a great showing in the 55-meter hurdles event at the Ole Open, claiming second place with a provisional qualifying time of 8.59 seconds. She finished runner up only to teammate Jen Stafslien.

Field: Jessica Owens, Fr., Elm Grove (Brookfield East)
Owens posted a provisional qualifying jump in the high jump at last weekend's Ole Open in Minnesota. She took second place in the event, clearing a height of 1.65 meters (5-5).

February 14, 2005-February 20, 2005

Track: Ashley Nelson, Sr., Darwin, MN (Litchfield)
Nelson had a fantastic weekend as she earned two, first-place finishes at the UW-Stout Invite, leading the Blugolds to a second place finish. Nelson won the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.54 seconds and the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.91 seconds. She posted the fastest time in the 55-meter dash preliminaries and bested that time by 3/100ths of a second for the win. The time is her best of the season in that event while her time in the 200-meter dash is the best on the Blugold roster this season by more than half of a second.

Field: Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien took second in both the long and triple jump events at the UW-Stout Invite, finishing runner up to Stout's Laura Verdegan in both events. She posted a provisionally qualifying jump of 11.35 meters (37-3) in the triple jump but was well short of Verdegan's jump of 11.64 meters (38-2.25). She also won the 55-meter hurdles event with a time of 8.54 seconds.

February 7, 2005-February 13, 2005

Track: Christina Locke, So., Racine (Horlick)
Locke helped the Blugolds to a second place finish at the Border Battle hosted by St. Olaf. She earned a win in the 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 2:22.41.

Field: Stephanie Barnes, So., Sauk City (Sauk Prairie)
Barnes set a school and facility record in the pole vault competition at last weekend's Border Battle Invite in Minnesota. She won the event with a height of 3.66 meters (12-0), a provisionally qualifying mark for national competition. The mark broke her own school record of 3.52 meters (11-6.5), which she set earlier this year. Before this season the school indoor record for the pole vault competition was 3.37 meters (11-0.75).

January 31, 2005-February 6, 2005

Field: Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien had a fantastic showing at the Warren Bowlus Open hosted by UW-Stout. The Blugolds took third place out of eight teams at the meet and were powered by Stafslien's three, first-place finishes. The senior Blugold won the 55-meter hurdles event with an NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 8.56 seconds while also winning a pair of field events in the long and triple jumps. She won the long jump with a distance of 5.28 meters (17-4) while winning the triple jump with a distance of 11.34 meters (37-2.5).

Field: Stephanie Barnes, So., Sauk City (Sauk Prairie)
Barnes earned a second place finish in the pole vault competition at Saturday's Warren Bowlus Open in Menomonie. She cleared a height of 3.52m (11-6.5) to claim second place.

January 24, 2005-January 30, 2005

Field: Jen Stafslien, Sr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien had a great meet at the UW-Stout Open as she won three different events. Stafslien won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds while also winning both the long and triple jump competitions. She posted a distance of 5.10 meters in the long jump and 10.79 meters in the triple jump. Her time of 8.63 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles was three-hundredths of a second short of a provisional time.

Field: Kate Stuewe, Fr., Norwood, MN (Waconia)
Stuewe posted a lifetime best throw in the shot put competition as the Blugolds competed in the UW-Stout Open last weekend. Stuewe's throw of 11.34 meters was good for eighth place at the meet.

January 17, 2005-January 23, 2005

Track: Christina Locke, So., Racine (Horlick)
Locke led the Blugolds to a first place finish at the six-team Blugold Open on Friday. The sophomore mid-distance runner grabbed first place in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:21.33.

Field: Stephanie Barnes, So., Sauk City (Sauk Prairie)
Barnes set a school record in the pole vault event at the Blugold Open on Friday, where the Blugolds claimed first place out of six teams. She cleared a height of 3.41 meters, a provisional qualifying height for national competition.

January 10, 2005-January 16, 2005

Track: Christina Locke, So., Racine (Horlick)
Locke posted a lifetime best in the mile run last weekend at the Badger Classic in Madison. She finished the mile in a time of 5:19, good for fourth place in a field that included Division I Wisconsin.

Field: Stephanie Barnes, So., Sauk City (Sauk Prairie)
Barnes posted a national provisionally qualifying time in the pole vault at the Badger Classic, clearing a height of 3.36 meters (11-0.25). The height was good for third place in the event, which featured competition from Division I Wisconsin.
