2003-04 Basketball Athletes of the Week

February 16, 2004-February 22, 2004

Toya Banks, Guard, Sr., Rock Island, IL
Banks led the Blugolds to a regular season finale victory on the road over UW-Platteville 70-65. She totaled a career-high 24 points on eight-of-17 shooting and nailed three-of-four shots from behind the three-point arc. She also connected on all five free-throw attempts while totaling four rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the victory that sent the Blugolds into the WIAC tournament with a two-game win streak and the No. 3 seed in the tourney.

February 9, 2004-February 15, 2004

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls (Chi-Hi)
The senior Spaeth led Eau Claire to a 64-60 victory over fourth-ranked Stevens Point on senior day in Eau Claire. She put together two very solid performances on the week, totaling 19 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two blocks on Wednesday against Oshkosh while totaling 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in the win over the Pointers. She finished the week with 32 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.

February 2, 2004-February 8, 2004

Toya Banks, Guard, Sr., Rock Island, IL
Banks led the Blugolds in scoring in a 51-40 road victory over River Falls on Saturday. Her 16 points was a game-best, and she also totaled five rebounds, an assist, and a steal in the victory. For the week she finished with 21 points, six rebounds, three steals, and an assist.

January 26, 2004-February 1, 2004

Toya Banks, Guard, Sr., Rock Island, IL
Banks had a phenomenal game in leading the Blugolds to a 77-58 road victory over Whitewater. She scored 18 points on six-of-eight shooting, including three-of-four shooting from three-point range, while totaling two assists, a steal, and a rebound in 21 minutes. She also connected on all three attempts from the free throw line. In Wednesday's victory over Superior, Banks scored six points and a rebound in 14 minutes to finish the week with 24 points on nine-of-16 shooting (56.3 percent), two rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 35 minutes.

January 19, 2004-January 25, 2004

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls (Chi-Hi)
Spaeth led the Blugolds to a 1-1 record this week as Eau Claire topped Platteville and nearly erased a 19-point second half deficit in a close loss to UW-Stout. Spaeth had an incredible game against the Blue Devils, posting a double-double with a game-high 22 points as well as a game-high 12 rebounds. She also totaled two assists, two blocks, and a steal in the loss. In the Blugolds' win over Platteville, Spaeth totaled eight points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and a steal. For the week she finished with 30 points, 20 rebounds, five blocks, four assists, and two steals.

January 12, 2004-January 18, 2004

Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt, F/C, Sr., Stanley (Stanley-Boyd)
Wozniak-Schmidt led the Blugolds to two victories, including a 57-53 road win against No. 23 UW-Oshkosh. Against the Titans she totaled a team-high 15 points on six-of-seven shooting from the floor and three-of-five from the free throw line. She led the Blugolds to a 38-25 rebounding advantage with a team-best eight rebounds while also totaling two assists and a block. In Sunday's victory over Viterbo, Wozniak-Schmidt posted a double-double as she scored team-bests in both points and rebounds again, grabbing 17 rebounds and scoring 13 points. Of her 17 rebounds, 10 came on the offensive glass as she led the team to a 46-29 rebounding advantage. For the week she finished with 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting, 25 rebounds with 14 coming on the offensive glass, two assists, one block, and one steal.

January 5, 2004-January 11, 2004

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls, WI (Chi-Hi)
Spaeth led the Blugolds to two dominating victories as Eau Claire topped River Falls 71-50 on Wednesday and defeated Whitewater 86-50 on Saturday. The inside player had a huge game against the Warhawks, scoring 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting while grabbing 13 rebounds and sinking an astonishing 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. Spaeth also blocked two shots in the victory over the Warhawks. Against the Falcons, Spaeth scored 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting while grabbing three rebounds. For the week, Spaeth shot an even 52 percent from the floor in scoring 35 points and did not miss a single free throw in nine attempts. She also grabbed 16 rebounds.

December 28, 2003-January 4, 2004

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls, WI (Chi-Hi)
Spaeth helped the Blugolds to the Posada Royale Classic championship title in California and was named to the five player all-tournament team. In a 69-49 victory over Linfield, she totaled a team-best 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 shooting from the free throw line while also grabbing seven rebounds. In the championship game against undefeated Puget Sound, Spaeth scored eight points while also totaling eight rebounds and three steals. In a tough 57-55 loss to third-ranked Stevens Point, Spaeth was the bright spot for the Blugold offense, scoring a game-best 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting while also grabbing 11 rebounds. She also hit 2-of-3 from behind the three-point arc in the loss. For the week Spaeth totaled 51 points and 26 rebounds.

December 8, 2003-December 14, 2003

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls, WI (Chi-Hi)
Spaeth led the Blugolds to two close wins with a 66-65 victory over conference opponent UW-Superior and a 78-74 win over St. Scholastica, with both wins coming on the road. Against Superior, Spaeth scored nearly half of the Blugolds points, totaling 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting while also grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out three assists. Against the Saints, Spaeth scored 21 points and connected on 9-of-10 shots from the charity stripe. She also grabbed nine rebounds to go along with two assists. For the week, Spaeth totaled 52 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, one block, and one steal. She finished the week 19-of-26 from the free throw line and also connected on her only three-point attempt.

December 1, 2003-December 7, 2003

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls, WI (Chi-Hi)
Spaeth led the Blugolds to two one-point conference victories as the Blugolds topped La Crosse on the road 46-45 and defeated Stout at home 70-69 in overtime. Against the Eagles, Spaeth totaled 12 points and six rebounds in 33 minutes while against the Blue Devils she led a furious Blugold charge that saw Eau Claire score 41 second half points and erase a 12-point deficit. Spaeth scored 26 points, with 13 of the 26 coming in the second half alone. She totaled a double-double as she also grabbed 10 rebounds while adding three assists and two steals. She scored five of the Blugolds six points in overtime, including the game-winning free throw with five seconds left in the game. For the week she totaled 38 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block.

November 24, 2003-November 30, 2003

Becca Spaeth, Forward/Center, Sr., Chippewa Falls, WI (Chi-Hi)
Spaeth was a member of the five-player All-Tournament team at the 2003 UWEC Thanksgiving Showcase Tournament as the Blugolds finished in third place. Spaeth led Eau Claire in points in both games, scoring more than 20 points in each game. Against Morningside, Spaeth scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds while shooting 9-of-11 from the free throw line. In a win over Lakeland, Spaeth scored 25 points despite playing only 28 minutes. She scored 22 points in the first half and saw limited action in the second. She finished the week with 46 points on 15-of-24 shooting and 16-of-21 shooting from the free throw line. She also grabbed 16 rebounds in two games.

November 17, 2003-November 23, 2003

Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt, Forward/Center, Sr., Stanley, WI (Stanley-Boyd)
Wozniak-Schmidt was named the MVP of the Wisconsin Lutheran Tournament in which the Blugolds won the team championship. In an 83-29 victory over Clarke (IA) College Wozniak-Schmidt led all scorers with 12 points while hauling in 15 rebounds, 13 of those coming off the offensive backboard, while playing just 20 minutes in the win. In a 51-34 win over host Wisconsin Lutheran in the tournament championship Wozniak-Schmidt was the only player with double-digit points scoring 18 while adding 13 rebounds in the victory. In two games Wozniak-Schmidt scored 30 points, grabbed 28 rebounds (20 offensive) while shooting 10-for-21 from the floor.
