2008 Softball Athletes of the Week
April 21, 2008-April 27, 2008
Position: Casey Leisgang, Infield, Senior, Seymour, Wis.
Leisgang hit .391 (9-for-23) this week as the Blugolds went 5-3 in WIAC play. In three of Eau Claire's games, Leisgang went 2-for-3 at the plate and averaged one RBI in that three game stretch. Leisgang accumulated nine runs and four total RBIs. She also had three extra-base hits, including two home runs to increase her school record to 34 career homers. She had 18 putouts and 23 assists during the week.
Pitcher: Jenny Ross, Pitcher, Freshman, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley
Starting in six games and playing in seven, Ross pitched 38.1 innings and picked up five more wins. In the seven games, Ross gave up 12 runs, seven of which were earned, 32 total hits and struck out 25 batters. She allowed only four extra-base hits and improved her season record to 16-1. She now has a season ERA of 1.27.

Position: Michelle Butkus, Infield, Senior, Medford, Wis.
Starting in four games this week, Butkus went 6-for-15 (.400) and scored three runs as the Blugolds were 3-1 against WIAC opponents Oshkosh and Platteville. In game one against Oshkosh on Tuesday, Butkus hit a critical two-run home run in bottom of the sixth to help lift Eau Claire to a 3-0 victory. In two games against Platteville on Sunday, Butkus hit a double and a triple, both of which resulted in runs for Eau Claire. For the week she picked up five RBIs, two doubles and has four putouts and six assists. On the season she is second on the team with 38 hits and is tied for most doubles with nine.

Ross did what no UW-Eau Claire softball pitcher had done before, sending down all 21 batters in Eau Claire's first perfect game in program history against UW-Oshkosh this week. In the Blugolds first game against Oshkosh on Tuesday, a 3-0 victory, Ross struck out six batters and remained undefeated on the season (11-0) with the perfect game. For the week, Ross pitched 13.2 innings in three games and faced 50 batters. She accumulated 11 strikeouts, giving up nine hits and four earned runs in the course of the week. Ross also hit 3-for-7 this week, scoring one run and picking up an RBI on Sunday against Platteville. She leads the Blugolds this season with an ERA of 1.27, 73 strikeouts, three complete games and two saves.

Position: Jill Janke, Infielder, Senior, Black River Falls, Wis.
In the Blugolds' home-opening doubleheader against Stout this week, Eau Claire won both in six innings on the eight-run rule. In the first game, Janke went 1-for-3 (.333) in the Blugolds' 8-0 victory. She also scored one run and picked up an RBI. In the day's second game, a 10-2 win, Janke hit 3-for-4 (.750), including one home run. She accumulated three RBIs and scored two runs. For the day she hit .571, had 11 putouts and two assists. On the season she is hitting .382, is leading the team and is seventh in the WIAC with 21 RBIs, and is also tied for the lead on the team in home runs with four.

Ross started both games for the Blugolds against UW-Stout this week, picking up wins in both to stay undefeated on the season (10-0). Ross struck out nine batters and allowed only two runs, one of which was unearned, facing 32 batters in nine innings. Her cumulative ERA in the two games was 0.78, bringing her season average to 1.10, which is fourth best in the WIAC. In the first game on Wednesday, Ross also contributed on offense, pinch-hitting once and driving in two runs on a single.

Position: Tamara Zeman, Outfielder, Sophomore, Lodi, Wis.
This weekend the Blugolds split a doubleheader against St. Norbert College in Allouez. Eau Claire took the first game 11-1 in five innings, but lost the second game 6-4. Zeman hit well for the Blugolds, going 4-for-5 (.800). She accumulated four RBIs and hit a home run, her first of the season, in the day's second game. Zeman also stole a base, had three sacrifices on the day and was second on the team with eight total bases.

Starting at pitcher in the first game of the day against St. Norbert on Sunday, Ross helped the Blugolds to an 11-1 win in five innings, improving her record to 8-0. She pitched four innings, facing 14 batters in the day's first game. Ross struck out one batter and allowed one earned run on three hits in the game. In the second game of the day, Ross threw to six batters in two innings and struck out one. For the weekend she had a 1.17 ERA.

Position: Casey Leisgang, Infielder, Senior, Seymour, Wis.
On the Blugolds way to a 10-2 record on their spring break trip this week in Tucson, Arizona, Leisgang played an important role the entire week. She started all 12 games and appeared at the plate 41 times. Leisgang batted well during the trip, accumulating 23 hits, including four doubles, two triples and a homerun, for a .561 average. She picked up 19 runs and seven RBIs. In the Blugolds' 9-1 win over Lakeland College on Wednesday, Leisgang was walked four times, three of them intentionally, and scored three times in that game alone. In an extra inning game against Delaware Valley College, Pa. on Monday, Leisgang homered, bringing in two runs for the Blugolds to help lift the team to a 12-8 victory. Leisgang also had 18 putouts and 25 assists.

Ross had a good week in the circle for the Blugolds this week, as the team went 10-2 on their spring break trip. Ross remained undefeated for the season (7-0), picking up five wins this week in Tucson, Arizona. She pitched 29.0 innings in six appearances and five starts. Ross accumulated 29 strikeouts, allowing 18 hits and eight runs, on her way to an ERA of 1.21. She also had 20 at-bats in seven games, scoring five times and driving in one run, for an average of .250.
March 3, 2008-March 9, 2008
Position: Tamara Zeman, Outfield, Sophomore, Lodi, Wis.
Playing in six games at the Rosemount Dome in Minnesota this weekend, Zeman hit .471, going 8-of-17. She had two doubles and four RBIs. She also stole three bases, picking up one each day against the Blugolds' three opponents. Zeman also had a slugging percentage of .588 and a .571 on-base percentage. She also accumulated six putouts over the weekend where the Blugolds went 4-2 to open the season.

Ross pitched in all six games and started in one this weekend, as the Blugolds went 4-2 at the Rosemount Dome in Minnesota against three Minnesota opponents. Ross struck out 22 batters, playing in 19.2 innings, and gave up only four runs the entire weekend. She picked up two saves on Friday and is also 2-0 on the season.
