2005 Softball Athletes of the Week

April 25, 2005-May 1, 2005

Pitcher: Mallory McKinney, So., Brooklyn Park, MN (Champlin Park)
McKinney was a perfect 3-0 on the week as she led the Blugolds to the WIAC title. She pitched 18.1 innings on the week and did not allow a single earned run. She allowed two unearned runs on 10 hits while striking out 17 opposing hitters and walking just one. She threw a complete game, three-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Stevens Point as the Blugolds finished the week 5-1 and clinched the regular season title. She is now 14-4 on the season with an ERA of 0.92.

Position: Molly Blakewell, Sr., Eau Claire (North)
Blakewell was 8-for-15 (.533) on the week as the Blugolds grabbed the WIAC regular season title with a 5-1 record last week. She finished the week with a pair of home runs and nine RBI while collecting five walks, two runs scored, a double, and a sacrifice bunt. Blakewell raised her average from .244 to .290 last week in helping the Blugolds to the WIAC title.

April 18, 2005-April 24, 2005

Pitcher: Andrea Neuville, Jr., Green Bay (West)
Neuville pitched a complete game shutout against UW-Stout on Wednesday to improve to 12-2 on the year and win her 12th straight decision. She allowed just two hits in six innings as the Blugolds took the game 8-0 in six innings. She struck out five Blue Devils without allowing a free pass and did not allow a runner past second base. It was the sixth time this season Neuville has allowed two or less hits when pitching at least five innings. With the shutout, Neuville lowered her season ERA to 0.78.

Position: Casey Leisgang, SS, Fr., Seymour
Leisgang powered the Blugold offense to a doubleheader sweep over UW-Stout. In game one of the double dip, Leisgang led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run. The blast proved to be the only run of the game as Eau Claire took game one 1-0. In game two Leisgang continued to swing a hot bat as she ended the game in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to make the score 8-0. She finished the doubleheader 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI, two homers, two walks, and four runs scored. She was also flawless in the field, recording four putouts and seven assists without an error. Leisgang now has a team-best seven home runs this season to go with a .341 average.

April 11, 2005-April 17, 2005

Pitcher: Andrea Neuville, Jr., Green Bay (West)
Neuville finished the week a perfect 3-0, improving her season record to 11-2 and keeping her season ERA to a microscopic 0.84. In Thursday's doubleheader sweep of La Crosse, Neuville pitches six innings in game two, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out one and walking nobody. She earned both of Eau Claire's wins at the WIAC Cluster Tournament in Oshkosh, baffling Whitewater and Platteville. Against the Warhawks, she pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run on seven hits. She struck out three and walked one. Her finest outing came Sunday in a 2-1 win over Platteville, as she threw a complete game five-hitter and allowed the one run. She struck out four and walked nobody in the win. She finished the week with 20 innings pitched, allowing 17 hits and just three earned runs. She struck out eight and walked just one while allowing only one extra base hit, a double.

Position: Jill Janke, Fr., Black River Falls
Janke had a big week as she raised her season batting average to .375. She finished the week 9-for-19 for a .474 average while tallying five doubles and an RBI. She also had one sacrifice on the week.

April 4, 2005-April 10, 2005

Pitcher: Andrea Neuville, Jr., Green Bay (West)
Neuville was nearly un-hittable in three starts last week, posting a 3-0 record with wins over River Falls, UM-Morris and Northland College. She tossed a complete game shutout against River Falls on Wednesday, allowing just four hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking just one. Against Morris on Saturday, Neuville allowed her only two runs of the week, both of them unearned. She picked up the win by tossing five innings, allowing just two hits and the two unearned runs while striking out six and walking two in a six-inning Blugold win. In another six-inning win over Northland, Neuville threw five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while walking nobody and striking out two. She finished the week 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing just eight hits and two unearned runs in 17 innings pitched. She tallied 12 strikeouts and just three walks on the week.

Pitcher: Mallory McKinney, So., Brooklyn Park, MN (Champlin Park)
McKinney caused opposing pitchers trouble all week as she led the Blugolds to a 5-1 record, with the only loss a heart-breaking 2-1 loss in nine innings to St. Scholastica. McKinney posted a .500 average on the week (8-for-16), tallying a home run, double, five RBI, four runs scores, three walks, and a sacrifice bunt. She did all she could to get the tying run across the plate in the bottom of the ninth against St. Scholastica, laying down a beautiful bunt that moved the runner to third with just one out. The Blugolds were unable to get the run in.

March 28, 2005-April 3, 2005

Position: Steph Farenbaugh, OF, Jr., Brownton, MN (McLeod West)
Farenbaugh provided the offensive firepower in a pair of blowout wins over St. Norbert last weekend. In a 13-3, five-inning win over the Green Knights in the first game of the doubleheader, Farenbaugh was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBI, two runs scored, a doubles, and a stolen base. In the Blugolds' 15-3 win in the nightcap, she was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and another stolen base. She finished the week 7-for-8 (.875) with six RBI, five runs scored, two stolen bases, and a double in just 12 innings played.

March 21, 2005-March 28, 2005

Pitcher: Mallory McKinney, So., Brooklyn Park, MN
McKinney has the Blugolds off to a 12-3 start, including an 8-1 record last week at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. She is 4-1 on the season with wins over Eastern Connecticut State, Ramapo, Concdorida (MN), and Fontbonne and also earned a no decision in a Blugold win over 17th-ranked Alleghany. For the week she finished with 38.2 innings pitched, 21 hits allowed, 11 runs, six of them earned, 33 strikeouts, and 10 walks. Opposing hitters managed just a .178 batting average as she posted a miniscule 1.08 ERA. McKinney finished with a career high 14 strikeouts in a 4-2 win over Concordia.

Position: Rachel Paulus, OF, So., Wisconsin Rapids (Lincoln)
Paulus has helped power the Blugold offense to a 12-3 record on the season. In seven games, Paulus went 9-for-21 (.429) and finished with three RBI, three stolen bases, two sacrifice bunts, and a run scored.
