2004 Softball Athletes of the Week

April 19, 2004-April 25, 2004

Pitcher: Mallory McKinney, Fr., Brooklyn Park, MN (Champlin Park)
McKinney went 3-0 for the week, including two shutouts, as the Blugolds went 4-2 in conference play en route to winning its first conference championship since 2000. In a no decision against UW-Superior McKinney went 4.2 innings allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out three with no walks. In game two against the Yellowjackets McKinney pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the victory allowing two hits while striking out six with no walks. At the WIAC Cluster at La Crosse McKinney pitched a complete game shutout in a 2-0 victory over UW-Platteville. Against the Pioneers McKinney allowed just three hits while striking out five and walking one batter. In the Cluster finale McKinney posted her second shutout of the weekend defeating UW-Oshkosh 9-0 in five innings. McKinney went five innings against the Titans allowing three hits while striking out two with no walks. For the week McKinney pitched 21 innings allowing 15 hits, one run, no earned runs and 15 strikeouts allowing just one walk.

Position: Emilee Planert, Shortstop, Sr., Eau Claire, WI (North)
Planert helped UW-Eau Claire earn their first conference title since 2000 as the Blugolds went 4-2 in conference play and 5-3 overall on the week. In eight games Planert batted .348 with eight hits in 23 at bats scoring five runs and totaled five runs batted in for the week. Of those eight hits Planert recorded two home runs, one triple and one double to go along with three stolen bases. In the field Planert posted 17 putouts, 27 assists against just one error.

April 12, 2004-April 18, 2004

Pitcher: Mallory McKinney, Fr., Brooklyn Park, MN (Champlin Park)
McKinney finished 4-1 on the week including a save as the Blugolds ended the week 6-2 and sole possession of second place just one game behind conference leader Stout. McKinney won all three starts at the WIAC Cluster Tournament and recorded a save in the Blugolds' final game in the tournament, pitching one inning of scoreless relief for the victory. McKinney's only loss on the weekend was a 2-0 decision to Stout in which she allowed two earned runs to a team that averages nearly five runs per game. In five starts and two relief appearances McKinney pitched 27.1 innings allowing 21 hits, six runs, five earned runs, one walk and 15 strikeouts posting an earned run average of 1.29.

Position: Molly Blakewell,1B, Jr., Eau Claire, WI (North)
Blakewell helped lead the Blugolds to a 6-2 record and sole possession of second place just one game behind first-place Stout. In a 9-3 victory over Stevens Point Blakewell should great patience at the plate. With Emilee Planert intentionally walked to load the bases, Blakewell drew a walk to drive in a run leading to a five-run top of the seventh inning eventually giving the Blugold a 9-1 lead. For the week Blakewell batted .400 with eight hits, five runs, five walks, three doubles and three sacrifices while not committing an error in 65 attempts, recording 62 putouts and three assists.

April 5, 2004-April 11, 2004

Pitcher: Molly Johnson, So., Wisconsin Rapids (Lincoln)
Johnson posted an earned run average of 0.52 totaling 13.1 innings in five games, including 9.2 innings of scoreless relief. In game one of a doubleheader versus St. Scholastica (MN) Thursday and trailing 4-0 Johnson pitched four innings of scoreless relief. Johnson ended a three-run rally by Northland in the sixth inning by closing out the game allowing no runs in 1.2 innings allowing two hits while striking out two. In the Eau Claire Tournament finale against UW-Stevens Point Johnson squelched a Pointer comeback with two perfect innings of middle relief holding Stevens Point to no runs in the fifth and sixth inning facing the minimum six batters including one strikeout. For the week Johnson faced 44 batters allowing seven hits, three runs, one earned run, seven walks and four strike outs.

March 29, 2004-April 4, 2004

Planert hit .467 in four games played this week in leading the Blugolds to three victories, including a doubleheader sweep of WIAC opponent River Falls. In the first game against the Falcons, Planert hit a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete a two run comeback. She went two-for-four with three RBI, a run scored, and the home run in the first game but continued to impress in the nightcap. She hit her second homer in as many games with a two-run shot in the first inning. She finished the nightcap three-for-four with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. In two games at the Augustana Invitational, Planert went two-for-seven with an RBI and a run scored.

March 22, 2004-March 28, 2004

Position: Mallory McKinney, OF, Fr., Brooklyn Park, MN (Champlin Park)
McKinney continued an impressive start to her Blugold career at the Coe College Classic as she batted .563 in five games at the event. The Blugolds finished with a 2-3 mark at the classic but dropped a 10-8, 10-inning game to St. Francis and a 1-0 game to Northwestern College. McKinney totaled nine hits in 16 at bats while totaling seven RBI, a home run, and a run scored. In Eau Claire victories over Nebraska Wesleyan and Gustavus Adolphus, McKinney had two RBI in the first inning of each game to give the Blugolds early leads. She also hit a game-tying three-run home run in bottom of the seventh inning in an eventual 10-8 loss to St. Francis.
