2003 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week
April 7, 2003-April 13, 2003
Track: Zach Severson, Fr. Sun Prairie
Severson led the Blugolds to a second place finish at the Phil Esten Challenge as he earned five points in the 1500 meter run. Severson finished the outdoor event in a time of 4:00.75, good for first place in the event.
Field: John Schuna, So., Hudson
Schuna earned an automatic bid in the shot put competition while leading the Blugolds to a fifth place finish at last weekends Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse. Schuna took first in the shot put, launching an incredible throw of 16.52 meters.
February 17, 2003-February 23, 2003
Track: Zach Severson, Fr., Sun Prairie
Led the Blugolds to eight victories in 16 events at the Blue Devil Invite on Saturday. Severson won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.47.
February 3, 2003-February 9, 2003
Track: Ben Schmiege, Jr., Madison (Lakeside Lutheran)
Was the top individual finisher for the Blugolds at the Eastbay Invitational hosted by Stevens Point. Schmiege participated in the 3000 meter run and finished in second place with a time of 8:43.87. His time in the event was just one second behind the first place participant.
January 27, 2003-February 2, 2003

Track: Ethan Kreul, So., Poynette
Kreul helped the Blugolds win valuable points in the 3000 meter run at the Blugold Open with a first place finish in the event. He won the 3000 with a time of 9:03.42.
Field: John Schuna, So., Hudson
Was the only Blugold on the men's team to win more than one event at the Blugold Open. Schuna won the shot put competition with a throw of 16.79 meters while also taking first place in the weight throw with a distance of 14.27 meters.
January 13, 2003-January 19, 2003
Field: Kurt Heilman, High Jump, Sr., Kendall (Royall)
Helped the Blugolds to a third place finish in the season opener for Eau Claire at the Platteville Open where no team scores were kept during the competition. Heilman finished second in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.98 meters (6'6').
Track: James Larson, Distance, Sr., Brooklyn Center, MN (Park Center)
Took the only first place finish for the Blugolds in the season opener at the Platteville Open. Larson won first place honors in the 5,000 meter run finishing with a time of 15:27.72, over eight seconds better than the runner up. His first place finish helped lead the Blugolds to a third place overall finish.
