2006-07 Ice Hockey Athletes of the Week

January 1, 2007-January 7, 2007

"Andrew Johnson, Left Wing, 5-11, Sophomore, Andover, MN/Anoka
Also selected as NCHA Player of the Week"

Johnson scored seven points including two power play goals and one short-handed goal as the Blugolds defeated Concordia-Moorhead 9-0 and St. John's 3-1. Against the Cobbers Johnson assisted on the game's first goal, scored just 57 seconds into the game, to give the Blugolds an early 1-0 lead. Johnson would go on to score four goals with two coming off the power play, one at even strength and one short-handed to secure the win. The four goals tied a school record last accomplished by Cam Cook versus UW-Stout on October 25, 1997. The nine goals scored by the Blugolds were the most since a 9-0 victory over MSOE on November 29, 2003. In a 3-1 win versus the Johnnies Johnson assisted on the game's first goal at 11:00 of the first period and the game-winning goal at 11:12 of the second period on a power play.

November 6, 2006-November 12, 2006

"Sean Garrity, Left Wing, 6-2, Jr., North St. Paul, MN"
Garrity recorded the first Blugold hat trick in nearly three years in helping UW-Eau Claire defeat Bethel (MN) and Hamline (MN) over this past weekend and improve to 4-1 on the season. Down 4-1 against Hamline, Garrity scored the game's final three goals to give the Blugolds a 5-4 come-from-behind victory. Garrity's first goal came off the power play at 11:00 of the second period to cut the Piper lead to 4-3. It took little time for Garrity to strike again, this time scoring an even strength goal at 13:39 of the second period to tie the game at 4-4. Garrity would complete the hat trick early in the third period scoring again off the power play at 1:52 for the game-winning goal. It is the first Blugold hat trick since Rob Ouimette and Steve Dus both accomplished the feat against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on November 29, 2003. The previous night against Bethel Garrity assisted on the Blugolds' final goal to secure the 4-1 victory over the Royals. At 4-1 the Blugolds have already doubled their win total from all of last season.

October 30, 2006-November 5, 2006

"Ben Hendrick, Center, 5-9, Sophomore, Andover, MN/Anoka"
Hendrick recorded three goals, two coming off power plays, and an assist as the Blugolds split their weekend series with the MIAC losing to eighth-ranked St. Thomas (MN) 2-1 and defeated St. Mary's (MN) 6-5. Hendrick got the Blugolds off to a good start against the Tommies as he scored a power play goal at 6:05 in the first period to post an early 1-0 lead. The following night against the Cardinals Hendrick tallied two goals and an assist in the 6-5 victory. Hendrick assisted a Sean Garrity goal at 9:30 in the second period to give the Blugolds a 3-2 lead. In the third period Hendrick scored an even strength goal at 7:13 to extend the lead to 5-3. After the Cardinals came back to tie the game Hendrick scored the game-winning goal at 13:17 off the power play to secure the 6-5 Blugold victory.

October 23, 2006-October 29, 2006

"Ryan Mensing, Goalie, 5-11, Sophomore, Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS
Also selected as NCHA Player of the Week"

Mensing was a big part of the Blugolds' 3-2 upset win over UW-River Falls in the first game of the season for both games. In a game where the Blugolds never trailed, Mensing stopped 42 of 44 shots in his first-ever game for the Blugolds who were outshot 44-25 by the Falcons. The two goals the Blugolds allowed both came off the Falcon power play. The Blugold win snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Falcons. The win was also the first for the Blugolds at Hunt Arena since a 2-1 victory on January 11, 1997.
