2003-04 Ice Hockey Athletes of the Week
February 9, 2004-February 15, 2004
Phil Cherneski, Forward, Jr., Thompson, MAN (RDPC)
Cherneski totaled a goal and an assist in two games this week, including assisting on a game-tying goal against fourth-ranked River Falls. With the Falcons up 1-0, Cherneski fed a pass to Mike Lucenti who scored to even the game. The Blugolds went on to down the Falcons 4-2. The next night, Cherneski helped the Blugolds narrow a 3-0 third period deficit to a 3-2 deficit when he scored the Blugolds second goal of the third period.

Rob Ouimette, Forward, Jr., Iron Bridge, ONT (St. Mary's College)
Despite two tough, one-goal losses to St. Scholastica and Superior, Ouimette had a great week posting two assists and a goal in the two games. Ouimette brought the Blugolds within one goal of the lead at 5-4 on Friday against the Saints with a goal in the final six minutes and notched two assists on back-to-back goals against Superior in part of a three goal unanswered stretch in which the Blugolds erased a 3-0 deficit.

Phil Cherneski, Forward, Jr., Thompson, MAN (RDPC)
Cherneski powered the Blugold offense against second-ranked St. Norbert and seventh-ranked Lake Forest on back-to-back nights. Cherneski scored both of Eau Claire's goals in a 6-2 loss to the NCHA leading Green Knights as he tried to bring the Blugolds back from a 5-0 deficit. In Saturday's tie against No. 7 Lake Forest, Cherneski scored the Blugolds third goal of the game as Eau Claire tied the Foresters 3-3.

Chip Dunleavy, Forward, So., Littleton, CO (Columbine)
Dunleavy led the Blugolds to two victories, including topping 16th-ranked UW-Superior for the first time in the last 20 meetings between the Blugolds and the Yellowjackets. In the Blugolds 6-4 victory over Superior, Dunleavy totaled three assists and a goal. He assisted on the Blugolds' first two goals of the game to help the Blugolds take a 3-0 first period lead. After a Superior goal early in the second period, Dunleavy padded the Blugold lead with a power play goal. In the third period, Dunleavy fed a pass to Steve Dus who scored the game-winning goal. He also played a role in Eau Claire's 6-2 victory over St. Scholastica, putting the nail in the coffin when he swiped a pass away from the Saints and led a shorthanded one-on-one breakaway. Dunleavy pulled up 15 feet from the net and scorched a shot into the goal to put the Blugolds up 5-2. He finished the week with two goals and three assists.

Chip Dunleavy, Forward, So., Littleton, Co. (Columbine)
Dunleavy, playing in his first game of the season, had a major impact in a 5-2 Blugold victory over Finlandia. The sophomore forward totaled three assists including assisting on the game-winning goal. Midway through the third period Dunleavy lead a 2-on-1 breakaway and fed a beautiful pass past the Lion defender, perfectly setting up a Steve Dus goal. Dunleavy played with fire all night and helped lead the Blugolds back from a 1-0 first period deficit.

Andy Klapperick, Forward, So., Austin, MN
Klapperick played a solid forward this weekend in two close games against conference rival UW-Stevens Point. Despite the losses, Klapperick demonstrated good effort and helped the Blugolds stay close in both games.

Steffan Braunlich, Goalie, Jr., Los Angeles, CA (Loyola)
Braunlich played phenomenally in goal this weekend as the Blugolds topped Stout 2-1 on Friday and fell to fifth-ranked River Falls 4-1 on Saturday. The junior goalie played all 120 minutes in goal for the Blugolds. Against Stout, Braunlich did everything he could to earn the win, stopping 43 of 44 shots to hold the Blue Devils to just one goal and giving Eau Claire a 2-1 victory. Despite allowing four goals to an explosive River Falls squad on Saturday, Braunlich played very well in net, doing all he could to counterbalance a 38-22 Falcon shot advantage. He made 34 saves against the Falcons but it was not enough as the Blugolds tallied just one goal of their own. For the week, Braunlich went 1-1-0, moving his season record to 8-1-0, and made 81 saves.

Steve Dus, Forward, Fr., Onalaska
Dus had a breakout game in a 9-0 thrashing of the Milwaukee School of Engineering as he not only scored his first collegiate goal but he did it in style, tallying a hat trick against the Raiders. Dus scored a goal in the second period and two more in the third while playing spectacular at forward all week in leading the Blugolds to a 3-0 record on the week, pushing their season record to 9-1-0 overall. The first-year Blugold helped keep the puck in the Raider zone, allowing the Blugolds to notch their first shutout since the 2001 season.

Rob Ouimette, Forward, Jr., Iron Bridge, ONT (St. Mary's College)
Ouimette recorded two goals in Saturday's 4-2 victory over Concordia-Moorhead (MN) to push the Blugolds to 6-1-0 on the season. Ahead 2-1 in the second period Ouimette netted an unassisted goal at 16:46 to extend the Blugold lead to 3-1. After the Cobbers cut the lead to 3-2 in the third period Ouimette scored his second goal of the game at 7:01 and securing the Blugold victory.

Bryan Chambers, Defenseman, Sr., Farmington, MN
Chambers assisted on what proved the be the game-winning goal in a 4-2 victory over St. Olaf (MN) College on Friday night at Hobbs Ice Center. After a St. Olaf comeback that saw the Oles tie the game at 2-2, Chambers assisted on a Phil Cherneski goal with 3:30 remaining in the third period to give the Blugolds a 3-2 lead.

Pete Eloranta, Forward, Jr., River Falls
Eloranta played a huge role in wins against Bethel and Hamline which pushed the Blugolds record to 3-0-0 on the season. In a 5-1 win over Bethel, Eloranta helped get the scoring started with an assist on a Phil Cherneski goal which put the Blugolds on top 1-0. After another Blugold goal, he added to Eau Claire's lead with a goal of his own to go up 3-0. In the third period he assisted on yet another Blugold goal for his third point of the night. In a 3-2 win over Hamline, Eloranta assisted on two of the Blugolds goals, including the game-winning goal. For the week he totaled five points on a goal and four assists.

Steffan Braunlich, Goalie, So., Los Angeles, CA (Loyola)
Braunlich played a huge role in leading the Blugolds to a 5-3 win over UW-Stevens Point to match Eau Claire's win total from last season of one in just the first game of the season. Braunlich held the Pointer offense scoreless for the first two periods and allowed the Blugold offense to go to work, giving Eau Claire a 4-0 advantage heading into the third period. The first-year Blugold stopped 38 shots on the night, including saving 21 Pointer attempts in the third period alone. Braunlich made many phenomenal saves, stifling several Stevens Point scoring chances.
