2002-03 Ice Hockey Athletes of the Week

January 27, 2003-February 2, 2003

Rob Ouimette, Forward, So., Iron Bridge, ONT
Got the Blugolds' scoring started in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association match up against Lake Forest just 1:16 into the first period with a shorthanded goal to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, with the score 2-1 in favor of the Blugolds, Ouimette struck again, this time dishing a pass to Phil Cherneski who slammed it home to give the Blugolds a 3-1 lead.

January 13, 2003-January 19, 2003

Andy Klapperick, Forward, Fr., Austin, MN
Played solid on both offense and defense despite suffering back to back losses to UW-Stevens Point. In a 7-2 loss against the Pointers Klapperick assisted on the Blugolds second goal of the night, which at the time put Eau Claire up 2-1.

December 9, 2002-December 15, 2002

Matt Schultz, Forward, So., Menomonie
Came up big in the second period against conference opponent UW-Stevens Point as he scored the only goal of the period for either team after the Blugold allowed four goals in the first period. Schultz scored approximately half way through the second period to bring the score to 4-3.

December 2, 2002-December 8, 2002

Chip Dunleavy, Forward, Fr., Littleton, CO (Columbine)
Scored two of the Blugolds three goals on the week against St. Olaf College. The second of his two goals gave the Blugolds a 3-2 lead late in the second period. Dunleavy also assisted on a Greg Harris goal just three minutes earlier to give him a three point period against the Oles.

November 25, 2002-December 1, 2002

Scott Sutton, Goalie, Sr., Thunder Bay, ONT (St. Patrick's)
Led the Blugolds to a 1-1 tie over the eight ranked team in the country, St. Thomas. Sutton stopped 37 of 38 shots he faced against the Tommies. After allowing his only goal of the game early in the second period, the Blugold goalie slammed the door on St. Thomas. He stopped two shots in the five minute overtime to preserve the tie for Eau Claire.

November 18, 2002-November 24, 2002

Matt Gehr, Forward, Sr., New Richmond
Led the Blugolds to a 2-2 tie against NCHA conference opponent St. Scholastica. Gehr scored the game tying goal in the third period to pull the Blugolds even and end a five game losing streak.

November 11, 2002-November 17, 2002

Chip Dunleavy, Forward, Fr., Littleton, CO. (Columbine)
Played a big role in the Blugold offense against Concordia-Moorhead of Minnesota. Dunleavy's first period assist helped put the Blugolds on the board and led the way to a five goal outburst by Eau Claire.

November 4, 2002-November 11, 2002

Justin Kaufenberg, Forward, Sr., Shakopee, MN
Played excellently defensively as well as assisting a goal against St. Norbert. Head Coach Jean Laforest said that given the lack of personnel (due to injury) he showed great leadership on the ice.

October 28, 2002-November 3, 2002

Phil Cherneski, Forward, So., Thompson, MAN
Had a huge game with a goal and three assists against conference opponent UW-Stout. Cherneski scored the first of six Eau Claire goals to tie the game at one and lead the Blugolds to a 6-1 victory.

October 21, 2002-October 27, 2002

Scott Sutton, Goalie, Sr., Thunder Bay, ONT (St. Patrick's)
Turned away 56 of 76 shots this weekend against the number three ranked team in the nation, Rochester Institute of Technology. Coach Jean LaForest says 'in light of the heightened competition we faced, Scott performed excellently.'
